Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder that runs your station, then start the encoder output. The key authorizes the connection; it does not schedule songs or keep a station running by itself.
Before you create a stream key
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you need to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions.
- Sign in to the channel that will host the station.
- Make sure you have permission to manage its live streams. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Have an encoder ready. It may be software or a hardware encoder, but it must be able to send the station’s audio and video feed to YouTube.
Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Choose the Stream tab. Create a stream if this is the first broadcast, or select an existing stream and its settings.
- If you want a watch page ready in advance, open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse settings. Scheduling prepares the event; it does not send the station feed.
- In the stream settings, find the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes these credentials as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings guide.
You can reuse a key. To create a separate one, select Select stream key → Create new stream key. Treat the key as secret: do not publish it or place it in a publicly accessible configuration file.
Enter the key in the station encoder and go live
- In the encoder, choose YouTube as the destination if it is offered. Otherwise paste YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP server field, and paste the key into its Stream Key field.
- Set the encoder to send the station’s intended audio and visual output. For a scheduled event, check the event’s visibility, then start the encoder output.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. When it is ready, select Go live as instructed for the event.
- Check the preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that the audio is audible and that any visual output is present; do not assume that a connected encoder is sending the right program.
For an immediate broadcast, start the stream from the Stream workflow in Live Control Room. For a promoted event, schedule it first and connect the encoder when you are ready to send the feed. See YouTube’s setup instructions.

Set encoder quality and network capacity
Use RTMPS, YouTube’s secure variant of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder settings guidance gives bitrate recommendations that depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube’s H.264 encoder figures for the listed video formats, not a requirement that every audio-first station use those resolutions or bitrates. Choose settings appropriate to the visual feed and the encoder’s capabilities. If the feed is audio-focused, avoid sending unnecessarily demanding video settings.

YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity headroom: its streaming tips state that 20% headroom is recommended. Check the actual outbound connection, not just download speed, and test with the planned encoder settings. If you are budgeting for a backup stream as well, allow for its outbound bandwidth too. What a stream key does—and what it does not do
The key is the credential an encoder uses to connect to YouTube. It is not a playlist, radio scheduler, or automation system. The station’s software or encoder must handle audio rotation, the visual feed, and sending the stream. YouTube’s setup instructions do not describe a special radio-only key or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

YouTube’s help guidance states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. It also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous station should not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete video; check Live Control Room behavior and plan for the applicable limits. Details are in YouTube’s encoder setup help.
Protect or replace a compromised key
If you think the key has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. Resetting invalidates the credential the encoder had been using, so update the encoder before expecting it to reconnect. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset; editors and viewers do not have that permission. Follow YouTube’s stream-key settings guidance.

Troubleshooting a radio livestream connection
- You cannot find the stream key: confirm you are in the correct channel’s Live Control Room and open the Stream tab and stream settings. If the channel has not been enabled for live streaming, complete the eligibility steps and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The encoder will not connect: check that the server field contains YouTube’s stream URL and the Stream Key field contains the matching key. Confirm there are no extra spaces, and verify that a recently reset key has replaced the old one.
- The scheduled event has no preview: scheduling alone does not send a feed. Start the encoder output, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
- The stream is unstable: test upload capacity at the location and time the station will run. Lower the video resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected output, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- The stream connects but the station is silent or visually wrong: inspect the encoder’s selected audio input, playlist or program output, and visual source; confirm the preview before going live.
- The channel cannot start another stream: check the active-stream limits—10 per channel and 3 per stream key—and stop streams that are no longer needed.
