OBS cannot keep a YouTube stream running after OBS is closed if it is the encoder sending the video. To keep prerecorded children’s stories playing while your computer is off, use a cloud encoder that streams the uploaded videos to YouTube, or keep another local encoder and computer running. Choose a cloud stream for prerecorded stories—or keep a local encoder running
A YouTube Live encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. If OBS is that encoder, closing OBS stops it from sending the feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control when an encoder’s feed starts or ends; they do not keep OBS running after you close it. For a prerecorded story loop, move playback and encoding to a cloud service that sends the stream to YouTube. YouTube’s verified-encoder information lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous streams of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. That description establishes the use case, but does not establish a provider’s current price, reliability, media limits, or recovery behavior; confirm those details before depending on any service.
If you want to keep using OBS, the alternative is to leave the computer and OBS running, with a reliable internet connection and power. A second local encoder has the same basic requirement: it must stay powered and send the feed.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to enable. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling a broadcast.
- Check the content and audience designation. Make sure you have the rights to every story, narration, music track, and illustration you broadcast. Copyright matches or strikes can restrict a live stream. Set the audience designation accurately in YouTube; the consequences of marking a stream made for kids are detailed below.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps for the stream details and settings available to your channel.
- Connect the encoder. Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the cloud service or local encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot. YouTube documents key management in Manage live stream settings.
- Check the preview before going live. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then go live as directed. Check that the picture and audio are correct, the stream is available, and the story is playing as intended. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring stream quality and keeping an eye on local archive files when recording locally.
- Plan how to preserve the stories. Do not assume a continuous broadcast will become a complete YouTube replay. Keep a separate recording or backup if preserving the full story collection matters.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup. If you need a usable replay, consider breaking programming into shorter sessions and retain a separate copy of the source recordings. The limit applies whether the feed comes from a cloud encoder or local OBS; YouTube’s archive live streams guidance explains the risk.
Account for made-for-kids live-stream restrictions
If YouTube designates the stream as made for kids, it disables live chat and chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still appear. These platform restrictions affect audience interaction and monetization, so plan the stream format accordingly. Common problems and fixes
- The stream stops when OBS closes: OBS was the encoder sending the feed. Use a cloud encoder, or leave a local encoder and its computer running.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Check that the encoder is connected to the correct stream URL and key, then verify that it is sending a feed. Recheck the key in Live Control Room without exposing it publicly.
- The stream is live but the wrong story or audio is playing: Check the selected upload or playlist and preview the output before starting. Monitor the first run rather than assuming the playlist and sound are correct.
- A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Split the broadcast into shorter sessions if a YouTube replay matters and keep a separate recording.
- Chat or reminders are unavailable: These features are disabled for streams designated made for kids. Review the audience designation and plan around YouTube’s rules rather than expecting those controls to appear.
- A stream is restricted after a copyright match or strike: Review the rights for all story components, including narration, music, and illustrations, and resolve any rights issue through YouTube’s applicable process.
