AzuraCast’s radio-video-stream example is the direct route: a custom Liquidsoap script sends your station audio to YouTube over RTMP while pairing it with a video loop and an optional currently playing song overlay. It is an advanced, as-is configuration—not a built-in, guaranteed-compatible feature—so check the script against your installed AzuraCast and Liquidsoap versions before applying it.
How the AzuraCast-to-YouTube setup works
AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap as the AutoDJ layer that generates or manipulates the station’s audio. The example attaches an RTMP output to that workflow, using the composed station audio as its source and a video file as the visual. It can also display the currently playing song across the video. YouTube receives the result as a live stream; it does not turn the radio broadcast into a camera-based production.
The script is intended for users comfortable with custom Liquidsoap configuration. The repository describes it as an example for power users, supplied as-is without active support. It lists AzuraCast 0.19.0 or a later Rolling Release version, but that is not a guarantee that the script will work with every current installation: changes to Liquidsoap can make custom scripts fail to parse or launch. Check the repository’s current script and instructions against your installed release before proceeding.
What you need before you start
- An operating AzuraCast station and permission to edit its Liquidsoap configuration.
- A YouTube stream’s server URL and stream key, obtained in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A video file for the visual loop and, if you want the song overlay, a TTF font uploaded to the station’s media storage. The example uses a folder named
videostream; configure the paths to match your station. - Comfort editing a custom script and checking Liquidsoap logs if the broadcast fails.
Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it can publish to the associated stream or channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to retrieve and use the server URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Set up the radio stream and video loop
1. Create the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a live stream or schedule one.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the stream setup. Do not share the key or include it in public screenshots.
2. Add the visual assets to AzuraCast
- Upload a video file to the station media library. The example expects a video-loop folder named
videostream; either use that layout or update the script’s media path to your own. - Upload a TTF font if you want Liquidsoap to render the currently playing song over the video. Set the font path and specifications in the script to match the uploaded file.
The repository includes a sample video loop, but you are responsible for supplying or configuring the media assets used by your station.
3. Add and customize the Liquidsoap script
- Open the station in AzuraCast and go to Broadcasting → Edit Liquidsoap Configuration.
- Open the repository’s
video_stream.liqexample and paste or import it into the bottom custom-configuration field. - Before saving, customize the station directory, YouTube RTMP destination and stream key, and font specifications. Confirm that the video and font paths point to the files you uploaded.

4. Save the configuration and restart broadcasting
- Save the custom configuration.
- Use AzuraCast’s restart notice to restart broadcasting.
- Confirm that the station comes back online before moving on to YouTube.
5. Start the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube’s live stream setup, enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder settings. In this setup, the custom Liquidsoap output is the encoder.
- Start the encoder output from the AzuraCast configuration. If the stream is scheduled, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Check that YouTube receives both the station audio and the video loop, and that the song overlay updates if you configured it.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that the same automatic-archive behavior applies to streams lasting longer than 12 hours.
Choose between the AzuraCast script and a desktop encoder

Choose the Liquidsoap approach if you are comfortable maintaining station-side custom code and want the video output attached to AzuraCast’s audio workflow. A desktop encoder may suit you better if scene and graphic control matters more and you can keep a separate computer operating.

Troubleshoot a failed stream
AzuraCast will not restart after saving
A custom script may no longer parse or launch after an AzuraCast update changes the underlying Liquidsoap version. Check the station’s Liquidsoap application log for the error, compare the script with the repository’s current version, and correct or remove incompatible custom code. If necessary, temporarily remove the custom configuration to restore the station’s ordinary broadcast.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the destination uses the server URL and stream key for the intended YouTube stream, that the key was copied correctly, and that the Liquidsoap output is configured to use them. Keep the key private while diagnosing the connection.

The video or song overlay is missing
Check that the video file and TTF font are in station media storage and that their paths and font specifications in the script match the uploaded assets. A working radio stream does not by itself confirm that the video assets are available to the script.
The station goes offline during recovery
Prioritize restoring the station’s normal broadcast: inspect the Liquidsoap application log and remove the custom code temporarily if needed. Recheck compatibility against the installed release before re-enabling the script.

Copyright, monetization, and continuous broadcasts
Sending a station to YouTube does not establish that its music or other programming is cleared for that use. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the audio and visuals, including any rights relevant to live streaming and archiving. YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; that does not establish that a particular station, channel, or music catalog is eligible or cleared.
