In OBS Studio, use a VLC Video source for an ordered or looping playlist, or prepare separate scenes and switch between them while live. This avoids ending and recreating the YouTube session for each video, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback: network, encoder, media, or YouTube interruptions remain possible.
Choose the right switching method
| Workflow | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS VLC Video playlist | A fixed, ordered or looping set of local video files | VLC must be installed, and the playlist should be tested before going live. |
| OBS scenes with Studio Mode | An operator choosing the next video, interstitial, or layout | Requires an operator or configured controls; prepare and preview scenes in advance. |
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, in which the encoder sends its feed using the stream URL and stream key configured in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-streaming overview describes encoders as one of its supported methods.
Set up OBS and YouTube before the stream
- Configure the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure the event for encoder streaming. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and update OBS if you reset it.
- Prepare the videos and scenes in OBS. Add the required video sources and check that each file plays with the expected picture and sound. For playlist playback, use OBS’s VLC Video source; OBS documents that VLC must be installed for this source. Add the local files in the desired order and set playlist looping or shuffle as needed. See the OBS media sources guide and sources guide.
- Pick how the stream will change content. Use the playlist source for a set sequence that should run without someone selecting each next video. For manual choices, create a scene for each video or program layout. In Studio Mode, prepare the next scene in preview before taking it live; OBS also supports scene-switching hotkeys. See the OBS overview.
- Check YouTube’s start and stop controls. Live Control Room includes auto-start and auto-stop settings. Know which behavior is enabled for the event, and avoid stopping the encoder or ending the live event merely to change the media source.
- Test before relying on the setup. Start a short test stream and confirm the intended sequence, scene transitions, sound, and stream status. Check the Live Control Room preview and verify that the event is accessible through the channel or watch page and on mobile. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video; OBS likewise recommends a short test before depending on a configuration. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips and the OBS quick start guide.
Switch videos while the stream is live
For an ordered or looping playlist
Start the YouTube encoder session from OBS, then let the configured VLC Video source play through its playlist. Confirm the order and looping behavior in advance. The stream remains the same YouTube session while the media changes inside OBS; playlist settings do not protect against a failed file, encoder, computer, or connection.
For operator-controlled changes
Keep the encoder session live. Select the next prepared scene in Studio Mode, inspect it in preview, then transition it to the live output. You can also use configured scene-switching hotkeys. Switching scenes changes what OBS sends; it is not a reason to end and recreate the YouTube event.

Account for children’s-content settings
If the stream is directed to children, accurately designate its audience as made for kids in YouTube Studio. YouTube restricts or removes features on made-for-kids content, including live chat and live chat donations, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving to playlists. Do not mislabel children’s programming to retain those features. Check YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance for the current policy and feature details.
What a 24/7 setup can and cannot promise
Changing a source or scene inside an active encoder workflow avoids intentionally ending the live event for each video change. It does not establish that a particular stream will run indefinitely or without interruption. The cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not provide a 24/7 reliability guarantee or a maximum continuous-stream duration. A reachable platform, functioning encoder and computer, stable network, and playable media all affect whether viewers continue to receive the feed. Keep monitoring the stream and test the configured recovery and failover behavior rather than treating a successful test as a guarantee.

Troubleshooting video changes
- The stream ends when you change videos: Check whether the live event or encoder was stopped. Change the source or scene inside OBS while the same encoder session remains active.
- The playlist source is missing or will not play: Verify that VLC is installed, then check the file paths and playlist entries in the OBS VLC Video source.
- The wrong scene or video appears: Confirm that the intended source is visible in the selected scene. In Studio Mode, check the preview before transitioning it to the live output.
- Viewers see buffering, a frozen picture, or a dropped stream: Source switching alone cannot diagnose these symptoms. Check OBS and YouTube’s live status, the computer and network, and the media file; use the test and monitoring steps before depending on a long run.
- The encoder no longer connects after a key change: If the YouTube stream key was reset, update the key in OBS. Keep the key private.
- Expected chat, comments, or notifications are unavailable: Check the audience designation and YouTube’s made-for-kids feature restrictions. Do not change the audience label to restore features if the content is directed to children.
