To stream a prerecorded gaming VOD as a YouTube Live event, play the local video through an encoder such as OBS Studio, connect the encoder to a live event in YouTube Studio, check the preview and stream health, then start the broadcast. YouTube does not simply take a video file and play it as a live event for you: your PC and encoder produce and send the live audio-and-video feed.
What this method does—and what you need
This guide is for broadcasting a prerecorded gaming video as an encoder-fed YouTube Live event, with a live event page and the option to monitor chat. It is different from uploading a regular video for viewers to watch later. The practical setup is a Windows PC, the VOD file, OBS Studio or another encoder, an eligible YouTube channel, and a reliable internet upload connection.
- YouTube’s encoder workflow is designed for feeds such as gameplay, overlays, and external audio or video. OBS can send a scene containing a local video file as that feed.
- A capture card is not normally needed when the gaming VOD is already a file on the Windows PC. It is relevant if you are capturing an external console or device.
- A webcam, microphone, and headphones are optional. For a VOD-only stream, its existing video and audio may be all you need; a microphone is useful if you plan to comment live.
OBS menus and source controls can vary by version. The sequence below describes the workflow; check the labels in your installed version and run a private or otherwise controlled test before a public event.
Check YouTube livestream eligibility before scheduling
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. When livestreaming is enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access well before the planned broadcast. Create the YouTube Live event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live event. Set the title, description, visibility, audience designation, and schedule as appropriate. Confirm that you are preparing the intended event, not just opening an unrelated stream.
- Choose the encoder connection details. YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the stream settings used to connect an encoder. A stream key identifies the destination and authorizes the encoder to send its feed. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Keep the key private: do not show it in a recording, screenshot, tutorial, or public chat. - Leave the Live Control Room available. You will return to its preview and stream-health information after OBS begins sending video.
Set up OBS to play the VOD as the live feed
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if the installed version offers it and sign in or provide the current server and stream-key details shown by YouTube. Do not share the key.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. Add a Media Source and select the local gaming VOD file. Arrange the source to fit the canvas; add overlays or other scene elements only if you want them in the live output.
- Choose what happens at the end of the file. Decide whether the source should stop, restart, or be replaced by another scene when playback ends. Test the selected behavior in advance. Do not assume the event will continue with useful content after a one-time VOD finishes.
- Check audio routing. Listen to the OBS audio meters and a local test recording or preview. Make sure the VOD’s sound is present at the intended level and is not captured twice through both the media source and desktop audio. If you will speak over the VOD, test microphone level and avoid unintentionally sending echo or duplicate audio.
- Send the feed and inspect YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the correct event receives the video and audio. Check movement, framing, sound, and stream-health messages before starting the event publicly.

The OBS Media Source is the local-file playback implementation; it is not an upload-and-auto-broadcast feature in YouTube Studio.
Choose quality and encoding settings your connection can sustain
Use a resolution and frame rate that the PC and upload connection can reliably maintain. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, checking upload capacity, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR); it supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Resolution-specific bitrate recommendations depend on the chosen output, so use YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Do not raise resolution or bitrate just because the VOD is high quality; the outgoing stream must fit your sustained upload capacity.
- Test a representative section of the VOD, including its loudest audio and busiest on-screen action.
- For a standard SDR gaming stream, advanced HDR settings are not required. HDR adds workflow and encoder compatibility considerations; use it only if your source, encoder, and YouTube configuration support it.
Start, monitor, and end the event deliberately
- Once the YouTube preview is correct and stream health is acceptable, use the Live Control Room to start the event if YouTube presents that control for the selected workflow.
- Keep OBS and the PC running throughout a local-file broadcast. Watch for dropped connection or encoding warnings, and monitor chat if the event calls for it.
- When the broadcast is over, stop the event in YouTube Studio and stop the OBS output. Check the event’s archive and visibility settings if you want the replay retained or made public.
Starting an encoder feed and starting the public event are related but distinct actions. Verify the event state in the Live Control Room rather than assuming that pressing OBS’s streaming control alone has completed every YouTube-side step.
Check game, music, and other content rights
A prerecorded video is still subject to YouTube’s live-content rules. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if it detects material such as another copyrighted broadcast, it may replace the image with a placeholder and warn you. If the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. An archive may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. For licensed material, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its allowlist to avoid interruption. Before streaming, check the game publisher’s streaming permissions and confirm rights for soundtrack music, overlays, clips, and any other inserted material. Owning a game or having some form of license does not by itself guarantee that Content ID will not interrupt a live stream.
Troubleshoot common VOD-to-Live problems
