To stream a prerecorded gaming video to YouTube at 1080p with FFmpeg, output 1920×1080 H.264 video, choose 30 or 60 fps to match the source, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264. Send the feed to the RTMPS address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then test the preview and stream health before relying on it.
The settings below configure what YouTube receives. YouTube transcodes that feed into playback formats, so sending a 1080p signal does not mean every viewer will immediately see a 1080p option.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60
Use 30 fps when the recording is 30 fps or when the source computer and upload connection cannot reliably sustain 60 fps. Choose 60 fps for gameplay captured at 60 fps when your encoding system and upload can maintain it. Avoid converting the recording to a higher frame rate without a reason: it does not add real motion detail and increases the work and bandwidth required.

These are YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest recommendations; the minimum bitrate is not a promise of good image quality. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Allow additional upload capacity for audio and network variation rather than treating the video bitrate as your entire connection requirement.

Get the YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for your broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint where your FFmpeg build and the endpoint support it.
- Keep the key private. It authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Do not include it in public examples, screenshots, logs, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it from an authorized channel owner or manager account and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you need to select the resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room.
Configure FFmpeg for 1080p
In FFmpeg, the required mapping is a 1920×1080 frame size, the chosen source-matching frame rate, H.264 video encoding, CBR at the matching YouTube bitrate, and a keyframe/GOP interval of two seconds. Choose an audio encoder supported by your FFmpeg build, and send the output to the RTMPS URL copied from YouTube.

There is no single copy-and-paste command that can be stated as universal here: accepted options and RTMPS URL formats vary with FFmpeg build and ingest endpoint. Check the options available in your installed FFmpeg version and confirm the endpoint format in Live Control Room rather than assuming a command line will work unchanged on every system.
Essential encoder targets
- Resolution: 1920×1080.
- Frame rate: 30 or 60 fps, selected to match the recording and available encoding capacity.
- Video: H.264 with CBR at 14 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps as YouTube’s recommended targets.
- Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS preferred when supported by the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube endpoint.
Audio and advanced recommendations
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its advanced recommendation for stereo is AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. YouTube also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Treat these as advanced encoder recommendations; the core 1080p setup is resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, and a supported ingest protocol.

Test before the broadcast
- Make a short test using a representative section of the recording, including fast gameplay motion and the expected audio.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview for the expected image, resolution, and sound.
- Watch stream health and any warnings while the test runs. YouTube advises choosing a quality appropriate for the internet connection and checking upload speed.
- For the actual broadcast, continue monitoring stream health and messages rather than assuming the initial preview guarantees a stable session.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Why the stream may not appear in 1080p
- The input is not 1920×1080: inspect the encoded output dimensions, not just the source file’s label or player window size.
- The stream uses an unintended frame rate or bitrate: confirm the selected 30/60 fps target and matching H.264 recommendation in the encoder and review Live Control Room health messages.
- YouTube is still processing playback renditions: the encoder sends an ingest feed; YouTube transcodes it for viewer playback, so available playback qualities may not match the ingest immediately.
- Manual resolution selection is needed: automatic detection is the default; use a custom stream key and the manual Stream Resolution setting if required.
- The connection cannot sustain the chosen output: test upload capacity and lower the target or frame rate if the connection is unstable; do not rely on the listed minimum bitrate as a quality guarantee.
