If playback is behind the live edge, return to it before deciding. A playable video or visible chat alone does not prove the broadcast is still happening: the video may be an archive, and archived streams can include chat replay.
Check the YouTube watch page
- Open the video directly on YouTube. A repost or embedded player may not show the same status information as the original watch page.
- Look for a current live status. YouTube does not document one universal label or identical controls for every device and interface, so treat the page’s status as a clue rather than relying on a particular icon or wording.
- Check whether Live Chat is current. Live chat is for interaction during a live stream or Premiere, but chat visible beside a video is not conclusive: an ended stream may display chat replay.
- Check the playback position. If the player indicates that you are behind live or offers a control to return to the live edge, use it before judging. DVR can let viewers pause and rewind during an active broadcast.
- If the signs conflict, check the channel’s current live listing. If that still does not settle it, describe the status as unclear rather than claiming the stream is live or ended.
Tell a live broadcast from a replay
A YouTube live stream shows media being broadcast in real time. After it ends, the channel may leave a replay or highlights available as videos, so the fact that gameplay continues to play says nothing by itself about whether the broadcast is still live. YouTube’s explanation of live streams distinguishes the real-time broadcast from videos posted afterward.
Use three signals separately: the page’s current live status, whether playback is at the live edge, and whether the chat messages are being sent now or replayed. No single signal should override the others.
Why you may be watching behind the live edge
DVR can allow viewers to pause and rewind while a stream is live. When playback resumes, it continues from the paused position; the stream may still be broadcasting ahead of you. Return to the live edge if the player provides that option. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and notes that the limit can vary on some devices and older app versions. This is a stated limitation, not a rule that every long stream will behave the same way. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Why chat can appear after the stream ends
YouTube says Live Chat replay is available on stream archives by default, although creators can turn it off; edited streams may also lack chat replay. The messages beside an archive may therefore be from the original broadcast, not people chatting now. YouTube says live chat itself is unavailable after the stream ends, while comments appear below the video. For details, see Moderate live chat and Learn about Live Chat.
