FFmpeg is the better fit if you want direct control and can keep a computer or server, its network connection, and stream-recovery process running. A cloud service is the better fit if you want the stream to continue without a home computer staying on and prefer a hosted workflow. Neither option changes YouTube’s stream-key requirements or its stated archive limit for streams under 12 hours.
FFmpeg or cloud: what changes?
Both approaches send prerecorded podcast video to YouTube Live. FFmpeg runs on a machine you manage; a cloud service runs its streaming workflow on the provider’s infrastructure. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre and Upstream.so for continuous prerecorded streaming use cases, but their features and current plan terms should be checked with the vendors.
| Decision | FFmpeg on your computer or server | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the stream? | You manage the host, FFmpeg process, network path, logs, and recovery. Its input-loop option does not itself ensure uptime. FFmpeg documentation | The provider operates the continuous-stream workflow in its cloud environment. YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream.so for 24/7 use cases. YouTube encoder setup |
| Control | More control over commands and media handling, with more operational responsibility. | Workflow and available features depend on the provider’s current interface and plan. |
| Cost shape | FFmpeg is software, but hardware, electricity or server hosting, and your time can carry costs. No comparable total-cost estimate is established. | Terms and costs depend on the provider; check current plans directly. No independently comparable current price is established here. |
| Recovery and reliability | You need to plan monitoring, restart behavior, and backup connectivity or hosting. No tested uptime result is established. | Cloud operation can remove dependence on a home computer staying on, but that does not establish any provider’s uptime. |
| YouTube archive | YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not promise a complete replay of one continuous 24/7 broadcast. YouTube encoder setup | A hosted encoder does not change YouTube’s stated archive condition. Confirm any separate recording feature with the provider. |
Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable supervising a process and want command-level control. Choose a cloud workflow if reducing local operating work matters more than controlling the underlying host. Neither choice, by itself, proves a difference in audience reach.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. YouTube encoder setup
- A prerecorded video or playlist you have the rights to stream, including the podcast audio, music, guest material, and inserted advertising.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the chosen video resolution and bitrate. YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate recommendations are on its encoder settings page.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery, and recording or segmenting the broadcast if you need a reliable replay.
Set YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use settings compatible with your source and encoder rather than assuming one preset suits every resolution and connection. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

For stereo audio, YouTube’s recommended audio bitrate is 128 kbps, with a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Select the video resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s recommendations for that resolution and the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Run the stream with FFmpeg
1. Prepare and test your media
Check that the file plays from beginning to end, has the intended audio, and uses codecs your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest support. A podcast video with a static cover image can still be live, but test the actual audio and visual behavior you plan to broadcast. Keep a separate source file or backup if the stream is important.
2. Create the YouTube live stream and copy its ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In your FFmpeg command, use the RTMPS ingest URL YouTube provides and append the stream key in the format required by that ingest endpoint. Do not publish the key or include it in screenshots or public logs.
Exact Studio labels can change. Follow the server URL and key displayed for the selected stream rather than relying on an old saved endpoint. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube encoder setup

3. Loop the file and send it to YouTube
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. A value of -1 requests infinite looping for an input file. In outline, the command structure is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "podcast.mp4" -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the bracketed options and URL with values appropriate to the media and YouTube stream. This is a command outline, not a tested, production-ready command: input timestamps, codec compatibility, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, reconnect behavior, and ingest endpoint format need to be checked for your setup. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option behavior and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for stream settings.

4. Keep the process and its dependencies alive
Looping the input handles repeated playback; it does not keep the machine powered, repair a failed network connection, or guarantee that FFmpeg restarts after an error. For a 24/7 operation, arrange process supervision, log review, alerts, and a restart or manual recovery procedure. Consider backup power and connectivity if outages at the host would interrupt the channel. Test your recovery process before relying on it.
5. Test and monitor in YouTube Studio
Before a public broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check that audio is audible and in sync, video is stable, the stream health is acceptable, and the correct live event is receiving the signal. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and messages during operation. YouTube encoder setup · YouTube encoder settings

Archives, rights, and channel rules
Do not rely on one 24/7 stream for a complete replay
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee the archive behavior or completeness of a single 24/7 broadcast. If a complete recording matters, make a separate local recording or schedule shorter stream segments, then verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it. The archive condition applies whether you send the stream through FFmpeg or a hosted encoder. YouTube encoder setup

Confirm rights before looping episodes
Having a podcast file does not automatically give you permission to rebroadcast every element in it. Confirm rights for music, guest contributions, clips, advertisements, and other inserted material, and make sure your channel complies with YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. The streaming method does not grant those rights.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong server URL or stream key, live activation still pending, or encoder cannot reach ingest. | Copy the URL and key from the selected YouTube Studio stream, confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming, and check the encoder’s network access. First activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Stream health warnings or dropped frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or inconsistent, or output bitrate/settings are unsuitable. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, reduce the resolution or bitrate to fit the available upload connection, and test again. |
| Video or audio is rejected or plays incorrectly | Codec, sample rate, timestamps, frame rate, or keyframe interval may not match the expected settings. | Check the output against YouTube’s supported codecs and recommendations; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum) as advised. |
| FFmpeg stops and the stream ends | The process exited, host restarted, file read failed, or network interruption was not recovered. | Review FFmpeg logs and host logs, check file availability and network stability, then configure and test process supervision and restart behavior. |
| The replay is missing or incomplete | A continuous 24/7 stream is not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition for streams under 12 hours. | Use a separate recording or shorter segments if the replay matters, and verify current archive behavior in YouTube Studio. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
FFmpeg itself is software, but a local setup still uses hardware, electricity, network capacity, and operator time; renting a server adds a hosting bill. A cloud service replaces much of the host-management work with a provider’s workflow and plan, but costs and features vary. There is no independently established like-for-like total-cost or uptime comparison here, so calculate your own costs and check vendor terms rather than assuming either approach is always cheaper.
For a local setup, include the time needed to monitor and recover the stream in your decision. For a hosted setup, review the plan’s duration, storage, playlist limits, recovery controls, and cancellation terms before committing.
