Short answer: choose a managed cloud loop if you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without maintaining an encoder; choose OBS or FFmpeg on a VPS if you want more control and are prepared to manage Linux, bandwidth, monitoring and recovery yourself. A VPS sticker price alone does not establish which is cheaper: compare the same 30-day stream and include outbound transfer, taxes, IP, storage and operating time. No verified all-in price for an India-hosted VPS with enough transfer is established here.
What are you comparing?
All three approaches can send a prerecorded video to YouTube continuously, but they put the ongoing work in different places.
| Option | Who runs the encoder? | Ongoing upload traffic | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo, a managed cloud loop | StreamNeo’s cloud service | The provider’s connection after you upload the source, according to StreamNeo | Use the service dashboard and check its limits and support terms |
| OBS or FFmpeg on a VPS | You administer the rented server | VPS outbound transfer | Install and configure the encoder, protect the key, monitor the process and arrange recovery |
| OBS on a home PC | You administer the local machine | Your home internet upstream | Keep the PC, connection and OBS running; recover from power, operating-system or app failures |
StreamNeo is the first managed option to consider for a YouTube prerecorded loop: it runs in the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. These are vendor-described features, not independent reliability findings. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live-production service.
Which option fits your situation?
Choose a managed cloud service when
- You want to loop uploaded video without leaving a home computer or home connection running.
- You prefer a dashboard and a provider-operated recovery workflow to configuring and monitoring a server.
- You want a predictable slot price, but will still confirm included storage, quality limits, support and checkout terms.
Choose OBS or FFmpeg on a VPS when
- You are comfortable administering Linux and troubleshooting a long-running process.
- You want control over the server and encoder configuration.
- You have verified that the VPS’s included outbound transfer covers your actual bitrate, and have budgeted for overage or other charges.
Choose a home PC for testing or a suitable existing setup
A home PC can be useful for learning, testing or streaming when it is already running for another reason and its power use and internet capacity are acceptable. The trade-off is that your stream depends on the machine, OBS and home upstream staying available.

How much data does a 24/7 stream use?
Transfer depends primarily on the stream’s bitrate and duration. As a calculation, a constant 4.5 Mbps stream sends about 2.0 decimal GB per hour, or about 1.46 decimal TB in 30 days. At 10 Mbps, the arithmetic is about 3.24 TB in 30 days. These figures are bitrate-times-time calculations before overhead, not provider measurements. Check how a VPS counts traffic, including audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and retries.
This is why an apparently inexpensive VPS may not be suitable for continuous streaming: its included transfer can be consumed before the month ends. For illustration, DigitalOcean’s official pricing page lists Basic tiers at US$4/month with 500 GiB transfer, US$6/month with 1,000 GiB, and US$12/month with 2,000 GiB. A 4.5 Mbps stream’s approximate 1.46 TB monthly calculation exceeds the first two allowances but is below 2,000 GiB before overhead. At 10 Mbps, the approximate 3.24 TB calculation exceeds all three. Those displayed tiers are not a quote for an India-hosted VPS; location, tax, IP and overage terms affect the total. Check DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing and transfer details.

What bitrate should you use for a 1080p 24/7 stream?
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution, frame rate and codec you actually send. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; its examples also include 6 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60. The bitrate you choose has a direct cost implication when your VPS plan bills or limits outbound transfer.
YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check its live encoder settings page for the full, current table and settings for your chosen format. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

How to compare the real 30-day cost
Compare one 30-day period at the same resolution and frame rate. Do not compare a managed subscription with only a VPS’s smallest advertised monthly price.
- Set the target stream. Record resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point, then use the bitrate you will actually send.
- Calculate monthly transfer. Multiply the bitrate by continuous operating time, then compare that estimate with the provider’s included outbound allowance. Ask how overhead and reconnects are counted.
- Request an India-region VPS total. Confirm hosting location, plan, transfer, overage, tax, IP and storage. A verified all-in India-hosted VPS price with adequate egress is not established here.
- Measure a home PC if that is your alternative. Use a plug-in electricity meter to measure the whole machine at the wall, then multiply its average kW by hours and your own bill’s per-kWh rate. Check socket and load compatibility for any meter you choose.
- Count operating work and failure handling. Include the time needed to configure, monitor and recover the stream, as well as any power, broadband or server contingencies you choose to pay for.
For India, StreamNeo’s 2026 cost guide models a 120–200 W desktop and a tariff of ₹7–₹8/kWh, estimating about ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days for the PC alone. That is a model based on those assumptions, not a measurement of your machine or a universal Indian electricity rate. Use your own measured wall draw and bill rate. StreamNeo’s cloud-vs-PC cost calculator can help structure that comparison.

How to set up a YouTube encoder safely
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become enabled. Do not wait until the intended launch time to check.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder or service dashboard. YouTube allows creators to reuse settings and keys, and to reset a compromised key. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and do not put it in public scripts, screenshots or logs.
- Set the encoder to match the source and YouTube guidance. Choose a supported ingest protocol and codec; use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate for the intended quality and available transfer.
- Test before launch and inspect stream health. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the preview and stream-health indicators, audio, image, and whether the loop behaves as intended. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Plan for interruptions. With self-hosting, configure a process supervisor or restart mechanism, monitor the encoder and server, and decide how you will respond to a failed ingest or server reboot. With a managed service, read its recovery and support terms rather than interpreting a recovery feature as guaranteed uptime.
Copyright, reused content and monetization
A continuously repeated stream is not automatically safe to broadcast or eligible for monetization. You need the rights to every video and audio element you stream, including music, artwork and any third-party footage. A license for personal listening or offline use may not include permission to broadcast on YouTube. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a stream when rights or policy checks raise an issue.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Repeating material, including material you own, does not guarantee monetization; YouTube’s channel monetization review also considers whether content adds original value and complies with its policies. Check permissions and channel eligibility before investing in a long-running setup. Use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid, not as legal advice or a YouTube approval.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo says each slot plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it advertises automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is a vendor-described feature set, not an uptime guarantee. Indian customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting the common comparison mistakes
- The VPS looks much cheaper than a managed slot. Recalculate with the actual bitrate and monthly egress, then add tax, IP, storage and overage. A base plan price without transfer is not an apples-to-apples total.
- The VPS stream stops when the SSH session ends. Run the encoder under a persistent service or process manager rather than an interactive shell, then test behavior after logout and reboot.
- YouTube does not receive the stream. Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the key has not been reset. Check that the encoder uses a supported protocol and codec.
- Stream health is poor or the video buffers. Compare your configured bitrate with the source and YouTube’s guidance; verify stable outbound capacity and CBR. Reduce the target quality if your sustained upstream or VPS transfer cannot support it.
- A service promises automatic recovery. Treat that as a published feature, not a guarantee that every interruption will be recovered. Check service status, recovery behavior and support terms, and avoid assuming any option is failure-proof.
- The bill is higher than the estimate. Check whether the provider charges for transfer overages, taxes, IPs or storage, and whether retries and protocol overhead count. For a home PC, recheck wall power and the tariff used in the arithmetic.
