If the church’s only internet connection goes down, its encoder cannot send live video to YouTube until connectivity returns. A wired Ethernet connection can help prevent local Wi-Fi trouble; to keep transmitting through an ISP outage, you need a genuinely independent backup internet path and a plan for switching to it. YouTube’s HLS backup server URL is an alternate stream destination, not backup internet.
What can—and cannot—keep the stream live?
“Keep running” can mean either recovering quickly after a disconnection or continuing to send video during a complete loss of internet. These are different problems. Reconnecting can restore delivery when the connection returns. Sending video throughout an outage requires another internet path that does not depend on the failed service.
- Local Wi-Fi instability: Connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet to remove Wi-Fi as a potential weak link.
- ISP or service outage: A cable from the computer to the router will not help if the router itself has lost its internet connection. A backup path must be independent of the primary service.
- Encoder or YouTube ingestion issue: Check the encoder and YouTube stream health; a different ingestion destination may help with some ingestion workflows, but it does not replace internet connectivity.
Make the primary connection more reliable
Use Ethernet between the encoder and router
Connect the streaming computer directly to the router with a wired Ethernet cable rather than relying on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. This improves only the local link between the computer and router; it cannot prevent a failure at the modem, ISP, or beyond.
Monitor dropped frames and connection status
In OBS, watch the connection status and dropped-frame indicators while streaming. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate during congestion, which may reduce dropped frames but can also reduce picture quality. It is a mitigation, not a repair for the underlying connection.

Distinguish an encoder problem from an internet problem
If the stream falters, check whether the encoder is still operating and review stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Then test the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and stream health, testing connectivity, and contacting the ISP if the connection itself is at fault.
Plan a genuinely independent backup connection
To transmit while the primary ISP is down, arrange a second internet service or other backup path that does not rely on the same failed service. Independence matters: two connections that share a modem, provider, physical path, or power dependency may fail together. The right design depends on the church’s location, available services, upload capacity, switching time, recurring cost, operator complexity, and how much interruption viewers can tolerate. No single provider or device is a universal fit.

Decide how the switch will happen
Choose in advance whether an operator will switch connections manually or whether the church will use network equipment configured to fail over between internet paths. Confirm that the backup can sustain the stream’s outbound data rate at the church, and identify which components—such as router, modem, switches, or power—are shared with the primary route. A backup that shares the component that fails may not be a backup in practice.
Write and rehearse the Sunday procedure
- Assign a person to monitor the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room during the service.
- Record how to identify a local Wi-Fi, encoder, or upstream connection problem.
- Document how to restore the primary connection or switch to the independent backup path, including who is authorized to do it.
- Rehearse the procedure before a service so the operator knows what to do if the encoder disconnects.
- After a disruption, note what failed and whether the interruption came from Wi-Fi, equipment, power, the ISP, or YouTube ingestion; use that diagnosis to improve the plan.
Rehearsal is operational preparation, not a guarantee that viewers will see an uninterrupted stream.

Understand YouTube’s HLS backup server URL
YouTube documents a Backup server URL for HLS ingestion. It is an alternate destination for a compatible HLS encoder workflow—not a second ISP, an automatic internet failover, or a promise that viewers will retain their session through an outage. HLS requires compatible encoder settings and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Use it only when your encoder and workflow support HLS and you understand the added latency; it cannot send video when the church has no working internet path.
Troubleshoot a dropped church stream
