Start by checking what stopped: compare your encoder’s status and logs with YouTube Live Control Room at the exact time of the interruption. Then check the encoder’s local audio and video, CPU load, and outbound connection. A stream that ends after a few hours has no single identifiable cause from the symptom alone; the stop time and error state are essential clues.
First, identify what “stopped” means
At the next interruption, record the exact time and capture the visible status in both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room before restarting anything. YouTube may show that the stream ended, or that it no longer receives an incoming feed; those states point to different places to investigate.
- Save the encoder’s log and any on-screen error. Redact the stream key before sharing screenshots or logs; treat it as a secret.
- Note whether the encoder process is still running and producing audio and video locally.
- Record the dashboard’s message and whether the incoming feed disappeared at the same time as the encoder stopped.
Without the encoder and version, its log, the dashboard state, and information about the network path, the cause cannot be determined reliably.
Compare the encoder with YouTube Live Control Room
While the stream is running, inspect the live output in the encoder and the status or error information shown in YouTube’s live dashboard. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, local signal quality, CPU load, and outbound internet connectivity when troubleshooting a live stream. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

- The encoder reports an error or stops: Save the message and log. Check whether the encoder process crashed, was closed, or lost its source.
- The encoder appears healthy but YouTube loses the feed: Check the outbound connection and the encoder’s connection statistics. A local preview alone does not establish that the stream is reaching YouTube.
- Audio or video is already faulty locally: Investigate the source and encoder output before treating the problem as a YouTube-side interruption.
- CPU load is high: Record the load and whether it rises near the interruption. It is a diagnostic clue, not proof that CPU use caused the stop.
If the encoder can make a local recording, inspect it around the recorded stop time. YouTube also recommends checking the local archive when diagnosing picture or sound problems.
Use dropped frames to investigate the connection
In OBS, dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote streaming server or that the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, OBS may disconnect. Check OBS’s connection statistics and log around the interruption, then test outbound connectivity while the problem is occurring rather than relying only on a speed result from another time. - If dropped frames rise as the connection degrades, investigate the network path and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable.
- If the computer is on Wi-Fi, a temporary Ethernet test can help isolate wireless instability. A cable is not a universal fix: it will not resolve an ISP outage, routing problem, YouTube ingest issue, encoder crash, or power loss.
- If outbound connection testing identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
Do not infer from a single speed-test result that the connection was stable throughout a long stream; compare evidence from the time of the failure.
Update or isolate the encoder without losing evidence
YouTube recommends using an up-to-date encoder. First save the current logs and error details, then update the encoder and monitor whether the issue recurs. If the local output looks healthy but YouTube loses the incoming feed, trying another encoder can be a diagnostic step; it does not prove the original encoder was at fault.

YouTube’s guidance to refresh a stream key applies to certain third-party encoder startup errors. It does not establish that changing a key will fix a stream that had already been running for hours. Only change the key when the observed error fits that guidance, and update the encoder’s saved key securely.
Do not mistake the archive behavior for a duration limit
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a stated limit that explains a stream stopping after only a few hours. YouTube’s encoder guide also says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That describes normal ending behavior, not the cause of an unexpected interruption. Fix the cause indicated by the evidence

If the interruption continues, send the encoder support team or YouTube support the encoder name and version, timestamp, redacted log, dashboard state, and relevant connection statistics. Never include the stream key.
