Measure the average power draw of your actual setup, multiply it by the time it runs and your electricity rate, and keep the laptop’s vents clear. Continuous streaming does not inevitably damage every laptop; warning signs and safe operating limits depend on the model and conditions.
How much electricity does 24/7 laptop streaming use?
There is no broadly applicable published wattage for a laptop continuously encoding a YouTube stream. A charger’s maximum rating, a laptop’s idle draw, and power used to play a video are not reliable substitutes for measuring your broadcast workload.
For a useful estimate, measure average wall power while the laptop is streaming under representative conditions. Include equipment that will remain on, such as an external monitor, if you want the cost of the whole setup. To estimate the laptop alone, isolate it from other devices on the meter.
Calculate the monthly energy and cost
A watt measures the rate of power use; a kilowatt-hour (kWh) measures energy. Electricity bills commonly use kWh. For an average draw that stays roughly steady:

Monthly kWh = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × days streamed
Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × your applicable price per kWh

A 24/7 stream running for exactly 30 days operates for 720 hours. Use the rate that applies to additional consumption on your bill, and account for time-of-use rates if your tariff changes by hour. Measure fluctuating power rather than guessing
Power draw can vary as the computer encodes video, runs background tasks, changes screen brightness, or shifts power modes. The DOE’s plugged-in power measurement guidance says to record energy over time and divide by the period to get an average when consumption fluctuates. A plug-in electricity meter can help measure at the wall; its reading includes anything connected through it. For a representative result, match the stream resolution and frame rate, brightness, power mode, peripherals, and network setup you plan to use. Will a laptop overheat if it streams all day?
A laptop may become warm or hot during sustained streaming, but warmth alone does not prove that it is overheating or being damaged. Dell says a laptop feeling warm after 10–15 minutes of continuous use can be normal, and notes that streaming and blocked vents can contribute to heat. That observation is not a safe temperature limit or a guarantee for unattended 24/7 use. Huawei also describes high-power workloads and background activity as possible causes of heat and louder fans. There is no single temperature threshold established here for all laptop models. Follow the manufacturer’s operating guidance for your exact model, and watch how it behaves during an initial, supervised long run.

Reduce avoidable heat
- Use a firm, flat surface and leave the intake and exhaust vents unobstructed.
- Do not run the laptop on bedding or a cushion, or inside a closed cabinet.
- Keep the room and operating conditions within the laptop maker’s guidance.
- Investigate repeated thermal warnings, unexpected shutdowns, persistent unusual fan behavior, or performance loss such as throttling. Consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for that model.
A cooling pad or a particular target CPU temperature is not a universal fix: the suitable response depends on the laptop design and its ventilation. Persistent abnormal behavior warrants model-specific troubleshooting rather than assuming that every warm underside is dangerous.

Keeping the laptop powered is only one part of maintaining a stream. YouTube’s computer live-streaming guide describes webcam and encoder workflows. Network reliability matters too. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, checking the preview, using a reliable connection, and monitoring stream quality. This is YouTube’s platform guidance, not a laptop power or temperature specification. Review its live streaming tips and encoder troubleshooting guidance before a long run.
Choose a setup that fits the stream
A laptop can be appropriate when you need a camera, interaction, or a production workflow controlled locally. For an always-on stream, compare measured electricity cost and sustained heat with the capabilities and cost of any alternative. A cloud service that loops uploaded video may remove the need to leave a laptop running, but it is not a replacement for a live camera or interactive production.
- Local laptop: measure wall draw and observe heat and fan behavior under the actual workload; account for other equipment left on.
- Other local hardware: compare sustained workload measurements, thermals, stream capability, and electricity cost rather than assuming a desktop, mini-PC, or encoder is automatically more efficient.
- Cloud looping of prerecorded video: check format and operational fit, then compare the service fee with your measured local energy cost. It does not suit every kind of live production.
