Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Yes, you can run a 24/7 YouTube stream without paying for cloud compute, but “free” usually means operating an encoder yourself on a computer you already own—not a dependable, always-free cloud service. Paid choices range from metered cloud infrastructure, where you manage more of the setup, to a managed service that runs an uploaded-video broadcast for you. The right comparison is the total cost and work for your resolution, viewers, storage, recovery needs, and region—not just the advertised starting price.
What “free” and “paid cloud streaming” mean
There are three different operating models. They are not interchangeable: one uses a machine you control, one rents cloud infrastructure, and one pays a provider to operate a continuous broadcast.
| Option | What you operate | Where cost and effort come from |
|---|---|---|
| Existing computer and encoder | You run encoder software and send its output to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming. | If you already own the computer, there may be no new hardware purchase. You still need power, a reliable internet connection, configuration, monitoring, and a recovery plan. This is not a cloud service. |
| Cloud compute or encoding service | You configure cloud infrastructure or a cloud streaming product to ingest, encode, or deliver the stream. | Billing depends on the product: it may be based on active channel time and resolution, or on stored and delivered minutes. Setup and ongoing operations remain your responsibility to varying degrees. |
| Managed 24/7 broadcast service | You provide or configure content; the service operates the continuous broadcast. | You pay a service charge in exchange for less infrastructure work. Features, limits, recovery behavior, and terms differ by vendor. |
For a like-for-like decision, define the workload first: resolution, codec, content hours, storage, expected viewing, deployment region, availability target, and what should happen after an interruption. Without those assumptions, a “free versus paid” price comparison can be misleading.
Which option should you choose?
Choose an existing computer if you can operate it
A spare computer can avoid a new cloud bill, but it must stay powered, connected, and configured for the whole broadcast. Consider the cost of electricity, internet service, hardware wear, and the time spent checking and restarting the encoder. A machine that is free to acquire is not automatically free to keep running.

Choose cloud infrastructure if you want control and can manage it
Cloud products can move some or all streaming work off your computer, but “cloud” does not necessarily mean hands-off. You may need to configure inputs and outputs, choose resolution settings, watch usage charges, monitor the channel, and handle restarts. Provider billing units differ, so estimate the complete workload rather than comparing a single rate.
Choose a managed service if reducing operations is the priority
A managed service is designed to reduce the need to maintain your own encoder or cloud setup. In return, you accept a recurring service charge and the provider’s supported workflow and limitations. Check how it handles recovery, what content it accepts, how its plans are billed, and whether the features you need are included.

Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google Cloud describes its Live Stream API as pay-as-you-go. Billing is based on active channel time and configured input and output resolutions. A channel can be active and billable even when it has no input stream; the pricing page also describes a ten-minute minimum and rounds active duration up to the nearest minute. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing and confirm current rates for your configuration before estimating a monthly total.
The API has product-specific quotas and session behavior. Google Cloud documents that a session lasts 24 hours after a channel starts and that a channel may be restarted after 24 hours if it remains in a streaming state other than STOPPED or STOPPING. This is a Google Cloud Live Stream API detail, not a universal limit for all cloud services. Check the current Live Stream API quotas and limits against your output resolution and stream count.

Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare Stream bills for minutes stored and minutes delivered; its pricing page says ingress and encoding are always free. Storage and viewer delivery are still billable dimensions, so estimate both for your use case. Cloudflare’s pricing documentation was updated September 8, 2026, and states that WebRTC delivery billing begins October 15, 2026. That announced date concerns WebRTC delivery; it is not a start date for all Cloudflare Stream billing. See Cloudflare Stream pricing for current terms.
Upstream as another managed-service example
Upstream’s service page advertises one paid stream at $30/month, two at $50/month, three at $70/month, and $20 per stream per month for four or more; it also shows lower per-stream yearly billing. A separate Upstream article claims its free plan includes one stream and 24 streaming hours per month. These are vendor-published claims, not an independent market comparison. Verify current plan terms, taxes, availability, and limits on Upstream’s service page and its article about 24/7 YouTube streaming before relying on them.

Check YouTube eligibility and limits before paying
A paid cloud service cannot bypass YouTube’s channel requirements or policy decisions. YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Its guidance also states a simultaneous limit of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; both limits apply. See YouTube’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance for current requirements.

YouTube may restrict live streaming for policy or copyright reasons. A channel restricted from live streaming cannot use another channel to get around that restriction while it remains in effect. Buying infrastructure does not alter those rules; review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.

For an encoder-based stream
YouTube supports sending a live stream from an encoder. If you use HLS ingestion, Google’s documentation describes sending one encoded stream at the chosen highest resolution, multiplexing audio and video, and using HTTPS with persistent connections. Follow the current requirements for your encoder and ingestion method in Google for Developers’ HLS delivery guide.
Regardless of whether the encoder runs on a local computer or cloud VM, plan for the things that interrupt continuous operation: power or network loss, encoder exit, expired or incorrect stream key, a stopped cloud channel, usage limits, and YouTube restrictions. A 24/7 setup needs monitoring and a defined recovery procedure; simply starting an encoder once is not a reliability plan.

For a managed uploaded-video stream
Confirm that the service supports your intended content and playlist workflow, then verify that the YouTube channel is eligible and that the stream key is correct. Keep the source video and any rights documentation available. Continuous playback does not grant permission to use copyrighted material, and a stream can still be interrupted or restricted by YouTube.
Estimate the real cost before committing
Use one monthly scenario and include all material cost categories. There is no universally cheapest option established without a shared workload and region.
- Local encoder: include any incremental electricity, internet, hardware, and monitoring or maintenance costs.
- Cloud infrastructure: include compute, active channel time, input/output resolution, storage, delivery, networking where applicable, and any costs while configured resources remain active without input.
- Managed service: compare the recurring fee, number of simultaneous slots, storage allowance, billing period, and recovery or support features against your needs.
- All models: account for expected viewer delivery, required uptime, restart handling, and the value of the time you will spend operating the setup.
Cloudflare’s storage-and-delivery model and Google Cloud’s active-channel-and-resolution model do not map to a single comparable rate. Likewise, a managed-service price cannot be fairly compared with cloud compute without specifying the same stream quality, viewers, storage, and operational expectations.
