A laptop running continuously for 30 days uses 14.4–43.2 kWh if its average power draw at the wall is 20–60 W. Using one Chandigarh domestic-tariff example, that would mean about ₹40–₹233 in energy charges. These are illustrative calculations, not a measured laptop average or a bill estimate for all of India: your laptop’s actual draw and your local electricity tariff determine the cost.
How much electricity does a laptop use in a month if it runs all day?
A 30-day month has 720 hours. Multiply the laptop’s average power draw at the wall by 0.72 to get monthly energy use in kWh:
30-day energy (kWh) = average wall draw (W) × 0.72
For example, a 40 W average draw works out to 28.8 kWh over 30 days. Each 1 W of average draw adds 0.72 kWh in that period.

These wattage figures are calculation scenarios, not measurements, typical-laptop claims, or streaming benchmarks. The tariff rates are from the Chandigarh domestic schedule in the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 compilation, shown as effective 1 August 2024. The schedule lists energy charges of ₹2.75/kWh for 0–150 kWh/month, ₹4.80/kWh for 151–400 kWh/month and ₹5.40/kWh above 400 kWh/month. The table uses the lowest and highest listed rates to illustrate the arithmetic; it does not calculate a household’s complete bill. See the CEA compilation.
How much will 24/7 YouTube streaming add to my electricity bill?
There is no single rate to apply across India. Retail tariffs are set by state regulators, and state governments may subsidize some consumer classes. Your applicable rate depends on your state or union territory, DISCOM, consumer category, monthly consumption band and billing structure. Duties, fixed charges, adjustments and subsidies can also affect the bill. The ₹40–₹233 examples above cover energy charges only; they are not a national estimate or a prediction of the total incremental bill. How to estimate your own laptop’s power cost
- Find your applicable tariff. Check your latest electricity bill or your DISCOM’s or state regulator’s current schedule. Use the marginal energy charge applicable to the additional units, and note any relevant consumption bands or other billing rules.
- Measure the setup at the wall. Measure the laptop and its charger together while the computer is playing YouTube under representative conditions, including your usual screen brightness and network setup. A suitably rated plug-in energy meter or energy-monitoring smart plug can help. The measurement guidance reflects that power use varies; Microsoft does not endorse a particular meter here.
- Calculate energy use. If you measured average watts, multiply by 0.72 for the 30-day kWh estimate, or by 0.024 for daily kWh. If your meter records kWh over the relevant period, use that reading instead.
- Estimate the energy charge. Multiply the additional kWh by the applicable marginal rate per unit. Treat fixed charges, duties, adjustments and other bill components separately rather than presenting an energy-only calculation as the full bill.
- If you cannot measure, show scenarios. Choose more than one plausible wattage input, label each as an assumption, and show the resulting kWh and charge. Do not call an assumed figure a typical laptop draw.
Why the charger rating does not tell you the cost
The wattage printed on a charger describes its rated output capacity, not the laptop’s average electricity draw during playback. The actual wall draw depends on the particular machine and its workload. Continuous video playback also keeps the computer awake and the network active. Windows power mode, energy saver, brightness, and screen or sleep settings are among the factors Microsoft identifies as affecting energy use. Its guidance does not establish a universal wattage for 24/7 YouTube streaming. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power-settings guidance.
Battery-life figures are not a substitute for measuring wall draw. Microsoft’s Surface battery documentation describes tests that mix active use with modern standby and notes that battery life varies with settings, usage and other factors; it does not provide a directly applicable wall-power estimate for this workload.
