Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To run multiple YouTube channels at once with OBS, give each channel its own clearly mapped stream key, OBS Profile, and Scene Collection, then run and monitor a separate output for each destination. On Windows, OBS Portable Mode can isolate each instance’s configuration; macOS and Linux do not support that documented mode, so verify profile and scene separation carefully on those systems. Test every route before relying on it for continuous streaming: OBS and YouTube settings can help with recovery and health monitoring, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Before setting up multiple streams
First decide whether the channels need to broadcast simultaneously or whether you only need separate configurations that you switch between. Simultaneous, distinct feeds need independent outputs, each routed to the intended YouTube channel. Each channel also needs live-streaming eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility in that channel’s YouTube Studio. A restriction cannot be bypassed by streaming through another channel; YouTube describes that as circumvention. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the current requirements.
YouTube’s current guidance also sets simultaneous limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply at once; reaching either prevents another stream from starting. Treat these as platform ceilings, not as a recommended operating target, and confirm the guidance before planning a setup because limits can change. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
How OBS keeps channel settings separate
Profiles control stream and output settings
An OBS Profile holds settings such as the streaming account or service, server, stream key, video, and output configuration. Create a distinct, descriptive Profile for each channel, for example “Channel A — 24/7” and “Channel B — 24/7.” OBS Project’s Profiles documentation states: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” OBS Project: Profiles.

Scene Collections control scenes and sources
A Scene Collection holds scenes and sources, including the media and layout for a channel. It is separate from the Profile: selecting a channel’s Profile does not automatically select that channel’s scenes, and selecting its Scene Collection does not set the channel’s output key. Name both layers so their relationship is obvious, then confirm both selections in every running instance. OBS Project: Scene Collections.
Set up one OBS output for each YouTube channel
- Prepare each YouTube channel. In YouTube Studio, open the correct channel’s Live Control Room and create or schedule its broadcast. Confirm the title, visibility, and schedule before sending a public feed. Use that broadcast’s server URL and stream key for its OBS output. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Create and label the OBS configuration. In OBS, create a Profile for the channel and enter that channel’s service/server and stream key in the streaming settings. Create or select a matching Scene Collection containing the intended scenes, sources, and media. Check that any local media paths work in the instance that will use them.
- Repeat for every channel. Do not copy a key into several channel configurations without deliberately checking the destination. A useful naming pattern pairs the same identity across both settings, such as “Channel A — Profile” and “Channel A — Scenes.”
- Configure output and video deliberately. Set the output encoder and streaming resolution and frame rate to the quality you intend to send. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps, and recommends testing whether the computer has adequate resources. There is no universal CPU, GPU, or upload-speed requirement: load depends on scene complexity, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and the computer and network in use. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Start and verify each stream separately. Start one output, then check that the matching channel’s Live Control Room preview shows the intended content and that its health indicators are clear. Repeat for each channel. OBS reporting that it is streaming is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Run simultaneous OBS instances without mixing configurations
Windows: Portable Mode for stronger separation
OBS Portable Mode stores configuration alongside the application, allowing separate instances to use separate profiles and scene collections. OBS documents this mode for Windows; its Portable Mode page says it is unsupported on macOS and Linux. Follow the official Running in Portable Mode guide, and verify each instance’s Profile and Scene Collection before going live.

Launch parameters and other operating systems
OBS documents launch parameters including --multi to suppress the multiple-instance warning, and --profile and --collection to select configuration at launch. The --portable parameter is also documented, but the Portable Mode support limitation still applies. See OBS Project: Launch Parameters. On macOS and Linux, do not assume Portable Mode isolation; use documented profile and collection behavior and validate that each instance is truly using the intended settings in the installed version before relying on it.
Match YouTube’s ingest expectations and monitor stream health
Check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators alongside OBS status and logs. Google’s LiveStreams API documentation describes common ingest issues including unsupported video or audio formats, keyframes arriving too infrequently, and insufficient video reaching YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance also explains the server URL and stream-key workflow. Use the warnings to diagnose the actual output rather than treating an apparently active encoder as proof of a good viewer experience. Google for Developers: LiveStreams.

OBS includes an automatic reconnect option in its advanced settings. It may help after some connection interruptions, but it does not prevent computer, power, or network failures and is not a guarantee of continuous availability. Test reconnect behavior under realistic conditions before leaving a stream unattended. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Understand stream keys, broadcasts, and overlapping shows
YouTube treats a live broadcast and the stream resource carrying its video as separate resources. Google’s API documentation says a stream can be reused for up to three broadcasts when they do not overlap. For simultaneous broadcasts that need different stream settings, it describes creating distinct stream resources. Its example also shows a 24/7 feed and an interview broadcast intentionally using the same underlying stream when they carry the same content; ending the interview broadcast does not stop that continuous encoder feed. This API model helps explain the relationship, but it is not an OBS interface tutorial. Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

For separate channels with different programming, use an independently configured OBS output for each destination and confirm the matching stream and key in each channel’s Live Control Room. The API’s stream-reuse behavior does not remove the need to verify routing in OBS.
Preflight checklist for continuous operation
- Identify the channel and broadcast represented by each OBS instance.
- Confirm each Profile has the correct service/server and stream key.
- Confirm each Scene Collection has the intended scenes, sources, and working media paths.
- Check title, visibility, and schedule in the correct YouTube Studio channel before sending a public feed.
- Start each output separately and verify its preview in the corresponding Live Control Room.
- Observe OBS resource use and YouTube ingest or health warnings during the intended continuous workload.
- Plan for machine, network, and power interruptions. A UPS for the streaming computer and network equipment is an optional continuity measure, not an uptime guarantee.
Troubleshooting common multi-channel failures
The wrong channel’s video appears
Stop the affected output and compare its OBS Profile, stream key, and Scene Collection with the channel shown in YouTube Studio. Correct the mapping, then start again and verify the preview before making the feed public.

Another OBS instance opens with the wrong scenes or settings
Profiles and Scene Collections are separate; check both, not just the Profile name. On Windows, use separately configured Portable Mode instances when you need isolated configurations. On macOS or Linux, Portable Mode is unsupported, so validate the profile and collection selected for each launch.
YouTube does not start another stream
Check whether the channel has reached YouTube’s current active-stream limit or whether the stream key has reached its concurrent-use limit. Also confirm that the channel is eligible to stream and that the key belongs to the intended broadcast.
The Live Control Room reports poor or no ingest
Inspect YouTube’s health warnings and OBS logs. Check the output format, keyframe interval, and whether enough video is reaching YouTube; Google lists unsupported codecs, infrequent keyframes, and insufficient video as possible configuration issues. Confirm the server URL and key as well.
The stream stops when the computer or connection fails
OBS runs on the local machine, so a powered-off computer, power outage, or failed home connection can interrupt output. Automatic reconnect may address some connection drops, but it cannot remedy every failure. Consider tested backup power and a recovery plan for the machine and network.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to carry an always-on feed, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live.
