To run a scheduled YouTube livestream around the clock from a VPS, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then separately run a playlist-capable encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS. The event supplies the scheduled watch page; the encoder sends the continuous audio-video feed using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Scheduling alone does not play files or keep a stream running.
Schedule the YouTube event and start the feed separately
YouTube treats a scheduled broadcast and an incoming live stream as separate things: the broadcast is the event, while the live stream contains the delivery settings. Use YouTube Studio to create the event, then configure the VPS encoder to send media to it.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Reuse prior settings or create a new scheduled stream, then set its visibility and metadata. See YouTube’s encoder livestream guide.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, repositories, logs, or screenshots. If it leaks, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder on the VPS. Depending on the event configuration, wait for the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room.
- For a first-time creator, enable live streaming well before the planned start; YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
YouTube’s Live API also distinguishes a liveBroadcast from a liveStream; keeping an encoder feed running does not create or schedule the watch event automatically. See the YouTube Live Streaming API guide.
Build a playlist encoder on the VPS
Prepare FFmpeg and your media
- Install FFmpeg using your Linux distribution’s maintained package or a build documented by the FFmpeg project. Run
ffmpeg -versionand check available encoders before using options that depend on a particular build. - Upload the source videos to VPS storage and make a deliberate playlist or file list. FFmpeg’s format documentation covers the concat demuxer and its file-list behavior; its main manual documents input looping. Confirm the syntax against the installed version rather than assuming a command works for every build.
- Decide whether files can be passed through or must be transcoded. Stream copy is not a universal solution: differing resolutions, frame rates, codecs, audio layouts, or containers can require normalization.
- Set output options to match YouTube’s accepted ingest settings. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain continuously, with capacity for protocol overhead and other traffic.
Decide what the playlist should do
A single-file loop is simpler than a rotating playlist. For a multi-file playlist, decide the order, whether it repeats at the end, how new files enter rotation, what to do when a file is missing or malformed, and how audio and video stay synchronized. The concat demuxer’s flags and the placement of FFmpeg inputs affect behavior, so test the exact command with your actual files.

Keep the process alive and observable
Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it can start at boot and restart after an encoder exit. A restart policy does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: monitor the process, check YouTube’s stream-health indicator, and have a recovery procedure. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its live encoder settings guidance.
Choose ingest settings and size the VPS for the stream
YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS where supported. For RTMP/RTMPS it lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not minimum VPS plan requirements. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the current guidance, including its separate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec.
The VPS must sustain the selected outbound bitrate continuously. Allow headroom for protocol overhead, other traffic, interruptions, and additional streams. If FFmpeg transcodes, CPU demand depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and concurrent streams; remuxing or stream-copying can need a different compute profile. There is no universal VPS size or plan price established for this workflow.

- Compare sustained outbound bandwidth at your target bitrate, not just a headline port speed.
- Check CPU capability if transcoding, storage for playlist files and any local recordings, transfer limits, region and network path, and recurring price.
- Test with representative media at the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec before announcing the stream. Recheck the provider’s current regional network and transfer terms before purchase.
Test the event, plan archives, and handle rights
Test the end-to-end path
Before announcing the event, run representative media through the VPS encoder, confirm audio and video in the Live Control Room preview, and check for stream-health errors. When the scheduled event is due to start, connect the encoder and start the event as configured. VPS automation can keep media flowing, but it cannot ensure that a YouTube event has been scheduled, approved, or made public.
Do not rely on one multi-day stream for an archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If durable VOD copies matter, make a separate local recording or plan shorter events, then verify the resulting archives in Studio. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup; it does not require a particular drive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Clear rights and consider monetization eligibility
Only stream media you have the necessary rights to use, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also require the provider to have the necessary rights for exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. Read the livestream terms and conditions.
Automation does not make a channel eligible for monetization. In its July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is “inauthentic content,” applied the policy to live streams, and said such content is ineligible under channel monetization policies. Plan for meaningful editorial originality and variation; individual channel review decisions cannot be predicted. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common VPS playlist problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or YouTube does not receive the feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or live streaming not enabled | Re-copy the event’s server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the VPS process is running, and allow time for first-time live activation. |
| Stream health reports interruptions | Outbound capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the encoder cannot sustain its configured output | Check the VPS network path, sustained egress, other traffic, and encoder load; test at a bitrate the VPS can maintain with headroom. |
| Playlist stops or skips a file | File-list behavior, input ordering, missing files, malformed media, or incompatible stream parameters | Inspect the FFmpeg log and playlist paths, test each file, and validate concat or loop options for the installed FFmpeg build. |
| Video works but audio is absent or out of sync | Inconsistent audio layouts or timestamps across source files, or incompatible output mapping | Test the playlist as a whole and normalize audio or timestamps where necessary; confirm the Live Control Room preview before going public. |
| Encoder exits and the stream does not resume | The process or service manager did not restart it, or YouTube needs the event/connection restarted | Check systemd service status and logs, verify restart behavior, then inspect Live Control Room and re-establish the feed as needed. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live?
Yes, a VPS encoder can send prerecorded files as a live feed, provided you have the necessary rights and the content complies with YouTube’s rules. Repetitive or mass-produced live content may be ineligible for monetization.
What bitrate does YouTube need for a VPS stream?
It depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 3–8 Mbps for 720p, 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60; the VPS must sustain the chosen bitrate with overhead and headroom.
