Choose Supers for brief, live-chat interaction
Super Chat and Super Stickers fit a stream where viewers are present in chat and may want their message or sticker to stand out. A continuously available stream does not mean someone is always there to respond, so set expectations honestly: a highlighted message is not a promise of a personal reply or a particular acknowledgment time.
Choose memberships for ongoing community value
Memberships make more sense when you can maintain perks for paying members. YouTube lists possible benefits such as badges, custom emoji, members-only posts, early access, members-only chat during public streams, members-only live streams, milestone chats, members-only Shorts and videos, and other creator perks. What is available depends on the channel and the membership level; you do not need to offer every listed benefit.

Use both when each has a clear role
Supers and memberships are complementary, not mutually exclusive. A viewer may prefer a one-time purchase, while another may want a recurring membership and its continuing perks. Explain what each option does so viewers can choose without confusing a Super purchase with a membership commitment.

Eligibility and limits to check before enabling either feature
Baseline fan-funding requirements
YouTube’s baseline requirements for fan-funding features include participation in the YouTube Partner Program, a creator who is at least 18, and residence in a country or region where the particular feature is available. You must accept and follow applicable terms, meet any feature-specific requirements, and turn on the feature in YouTube Studio. These are baseline conditions, not a complete checklist; location and feature rules can change, so verify your current eligibility and settings in Studio. Super Chat and Super Stickers need eligible chat and video settings
Supers are unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, Made for Kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos. They also are unavailable when live chat or comments are turned off. Membership perks must match the level offered
Membership benefits vary by channel and level. Before promoting a perk, confirm that it is enabled and that you can deliver it consistently. YouTube’s current list and benefit guidance are in Use & manage your channel membership benefits on YouTube.
Do not describe Supers as donations
YouTube says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools. Payments may also be treated differently under applicable laws, so do not promise a tax treatment or a particular net payout. Review the applicable terms and policies before describing what a purchase means.

Set expectations for monetizing a 24/7 stream
A stream running around the clock is a format, not evidence of higher Super Chat or membership earnings. YouTube’s published guidance describes the features but provides no head-to-head results for their revenue, conversion, or retention on 24/7 channels. Your decision should rest on eligibility, audience preference, and whether the channel can sustain the promised membership perks.
Ads and YouTube Premium revenue are separate livestream revenue options, not substitutes in this comparison. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when monetization is on; mid-rolls may be automatic or manual, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Automatic mid-roll settings limit ad disruption to channel members and temporarily pause mid-roll ads for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers. YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic live mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels without live automatic mid-roll ads, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. YouTube documents IFTTT applets that can trigger actions when someone sends a Super Chat or joins as a channel member.
