This works best when the listed files have matching streams, codecs and time bases. For files that differ, use a re-encoding workflow with the concat filter instead.
Build a playlist from the folders
The concat demuxer reads files in sequence from a playlist and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one. It does not scan folders: you must generate or write the list of paths yourself. The order in the list determines playback order.
For example, a playlist might contain:
file '/media/folder-a/clip-01.mp4'
file '/media/folder-b/clip-02.mp4'
file '/media/folder-a/clip-03.mp4'This illustrates playlist syntax only; it is not a complete FFmpeg or YouTube Live command. Confirm quoting and any concat safety options for your operating system and FFmpeg version before using a list of paths.
Choose an explicit ordering rule
Decide whether you want alphabetical order, a shuffled sequence, or a schedule you control. Folder names do not imply an order to FFmpeg. A generated list should include the selected files in the precise sequence you intend.

Check whether the files are compatible
The concat demuxer is suitable for a fixed sequence when the inputs have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Different stream layouts or properties may cause errors or playback artifacts. Timestamp adjustment can also leave gaps when stream lengths do not align. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
When you can avoid re-encoding
Use the concat demuxer when the media streams are compatible and you want to join them in sequence without a re-encode. Validate the files with your actual FFmpeg build rather than assuming that matching file extensions mean matching streams.

When the inputs differ
FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the concat filter for cases that require re-encoding. A 2024 FFmpeg-user mailing-list reply about files with different formats, dimensions and aspect ratios advises transcoding them to consistent properties before concatenation; this is community guidance, not a guarantee for every file set or build. Separate a fixed playlist from a live folder rotation
A precomputed playlist and an automatically refreshed folder scan are different setups. The documented concat-demuxer approach describes reading the files named in a list; it does not establish that edits to an existing list will be picked up reliably while FFmpeg is running. If you add or remove files, regenerate the playlist and plan to restart the process unless you have tested a refresh mechanism for your exact setup.

Likewise, repeating a finite playlist is not the same as continuously discovering newly added files. The concat setup here does not establish a robust directory watcher, seamless live updates, or uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Connect the playlist to YouTube Live carefully
The playlist solves the file-sequencing part of the workflow, not YouTube’s current ingest configuration. Before creating an RTMP command, check YouTube’s current official instructions for the ingest address, stream-key use and output recommendations. The correct command also depends on the actual FFmpeg version and the audio and video streams in your files; no complete YouTube command is provided here as a verified recipe.

- Use the stream key only in the output configuration and keep it private.
- Confirm the required video and audio output settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test the exact playlist, representative media files and FFmpeg build before relying on the stream.
- Check that you have the rights to stream every video and its audio. Do not assume that owning a copy or finding a file online gives you permission to broadcast it.
Troubleshoot common failures
