To loop a playlist on YouTube Live, play local video files through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder feed to a YouTube live stream. In OBS, add the files to a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. The repeat control belongs to OBS—not to a YouTube channel playlist. This is also the practical answer to “How do I stream videos continuously on YouTube?”
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the broadcast: Get started with live streaming.
- A computer running OBS Studio, your video files stored locally, and a reliable internet connection and power source for the duration of the stream.
- Permission to use every video and audio track in the files. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID.
YouTube’s documented workflow sends an encoder’s feed to the live stream. A playlist on your YouTube channel is not itself a live feed, and the setup does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: playback, computer, power, network, and YouTube service can all affect continuity.
Prepare the playlist in OBS
For multiple files: use VLC Video
- Save the video files on the computer that will run the stream and decide their playback order.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene. Add the files to its playlist in the intended order.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the videos must play sequentially. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart the list when it reaches the end. OBS’s documented defaults are shuffle off and loop on; check the controls in your installed version rather than relying on defaults.
- Preview the scene and check that the video is visible and the audio is audible before connecting to YouTube.
For one file: use Media Source
If there is only one video, add an OBS Media Source and enable its separate Loop option. OBS documents this option as off by default. Media Sources can play local media; VLC Video is the playlist option for a sequence of files. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Create the YouTube live stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule the stream, then set its title, visibility, and other metadata. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers this workflow.
- In Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. The live stream settings guide explains stream keys and stream metadata.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (and server URL if your configuration asks for it). Do not share or publish the key.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended playlist is playing and that both video and audio are correct. For a rehearsal, use an unlisted or private stream as appropriate.
- For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room only after checking the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; those lead times allow you to catch setup problems.
Keep watch during the broadcast and end it cleanly
Check the live picture and sound, and verify access from the channel, the watch page, and a mobile device. If you configure encoder failover, test that the backup takes over when the primary encoder or its network connection stops; do not assume failover works without a test. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover previewing, monitoring, and failover.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When you are finished, stop the encoder in OBS and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says it automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Its guidance does not promise an archive for a longer continuous broadcast, so arrange any separate recording you need and plan the stream duration accordingly. Details are in YouTube’s encoder stream setup guidance.
Copyright and other limits to plan for
YouTube scans live streams for matches with third-party content, including other broadcasts. A match can lead to a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist; YouTube says a stream may still be interrupted if it has not been allowlisted. Read Copyright issues with live streams before broadcasting.

A playlist loop only repeats media. It does not make the stream immune to a disconnected encoder, a power failure, a network outage, playback trouble, or YouTube enforcement. YouTube documents HLS ingestion for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but HLS requires encoder support, has higher latency than RTMP, and has additional segment and playlist constraints. It is an alternative ingestion setup, not a requirement for an ordinary OBS playlist stream; see Set up an HLS stream.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist stops at the last file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. For a single Media Source, enable its separate Loop setting.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist and verify the sequence in the source’s playlist.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm that OBS is streaming, the correct YouTube stream key and server details are entered, and the stream is selected in Live Control Room. Keep the key private while checking it.
- The preview has no sound or picture: Check the OBS scene and source visibility, playlist playback, and audio meters; then verify the incoming preview again before going live.
- The stream is interrupted after a content match: Review the rights for every video and audio track. For licensed third-party content, ask the owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID; permission alone may not prevent interruption.
- The broadcast does not continue after the computer or connection stops: OBS is sending the feed from that computer, so a playlist loop cannot replace the computer, power, or network connection. Test any configured encoder failover in advance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded videos or a playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
