How to Run Two YouTube Livestreams at Once With Different Playlists

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—you can run two YouTube livestreams at the same time with different playlists by creating two separate live events and sending each event its own video feed. One documented do-it-yourself approach is OBS Studio with a VLC Video source for each playlist. Each output must use the stream URL and stream key for its matching event; sending one feed to two broadcasts duplicates the same content rather than creating two different playlists.

Before you set up two streams

  • Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with livestreaming enabled and no active restriction that blocks streaming. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube says users must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
  • Stay within YouTube’s active-stream limits. YouTube documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at once. These are platform limits, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain the maximum at any quality. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
  • Plan for two independent feeds. Each playlist needs its own incoming content feed and matching live event configuration. Google’s API documentation distinguishes separate live-stream resources for different simultaneous broadcasts from binding one incoming feed to multiple broadcasts, which duplicates the incoming content. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Getting Started.

Set up two different playlists in OBS

  1. Create two live events in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or schedule one event for each playlist. Set each event’s title, visibility, and other details independently, and use a distinct stream configuration for each different feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find the event’s server URL and stream key.
  2. Prepare one OBS playlist source per event. Add a VLC Video source for the first playlist, then load the media files in the desired order. Add another VLC Video source for the second playlist and load its different files. The OBS source supports playlist looping and optional shuffle. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear; see the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
  3. Set each output’s destination separately. Configure the first encoder output with the server URL and stream key for event one, and the second output with the URL and key for event two. Double-check the mapping before starting: playlist one must go to event one, and playlist two to event two. YouTube explains copying the matching URL and key from Studio into an encoder in its live-streaming setup guidance.
  4. Choose an output arrangement your setup supports. The playlist source and the two event configurations are distinct requirements; the way you produce two simultaneous encoder outputs depends on your OBS installation and output method. OBS may require separate instances, an output plugin, or another encoder arrangement. Validate the arrangement with a private or unlisted test before relying on it.
  5. Start and check both feeds individually. Start each output, then check the preview for its corresponding event in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture, audio, playlist order, and destination for each feed. YouTube recommends testing, checking preview, verifying accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality in its live-streaming guidance.
  6. Monitor capacity during the run. Two encoded feeds require more computer processing and outgoing bandwidth than one. The load depends on output settings and hardware, so test with the intended settings and monitor both stream health and available upload capacity. YouTube notes that local encoding can be CPU-intensive and describes cloud encoding as an alternative in its encoder overview.

What to expect from each encoder approach

Approach Useful when Trade-offs
Local software encoder You need separate scenes or file playlists and your computer has enough capacity. Flexible, but the machine must decode the media, encode both outputs, and upload both feeds. OBS’s VLC Video source supports file playlists.
Hardware encoder You already use production video equipment or need a dedicated encoder workflow. YouTube lists standalone hardware encoders as an option. Check that the model can produce two independent feeds; a hardware encoder is not necessary for the basic OBS workflow.
Cloud encoding Local hardware is constrained or you need a remote streaming workflow. YouTube describes cloud encoding as sending a feed to a service that distributes it. Service setup or a subscription may be required. Confirm that the provider accepts two distinct source playlists; mirroring one feed is not equivalent.

Compare options on whether they can create two genuinely different feeds, their supported resolution and bitrate, the capacity of your computer or service and internet upload, operational simplicity, and cost. The actual processing and bandwidth needs depend on your output settings, so test the configuration you intend to use.

Common problems and fixes

  • The two events show the same playlist. One incoming feed may have been bound to both broadcasts. Create and send two independent feeds, each with its own playlist source and matching event configuration.
  • A stream appears on the wrong event. Check the URL and stream key configured for each output against the matching event in Live Control Room. Correct the mapping, then verify the preview before going live.
  • The VLC Video source is missing in OBS. Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list again.
  • One or both feeds are unstable or the computer struggles. Two outputs add encoding work and upload demand. Test with the intended settings, check stream health and available upload capacity, and consider a cloud workflow if the local setup cannot reliably manage both feeds.
  • You cannot start livestreaming. Check channel verification, live-streaming enablement, and whether an active restriction applies. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.

Do not confuse two playlists with Live Redirect

YouTube Live Redirect sends viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after a stream ends; it does not run two playlists simultaneously. YouTube says creators using redirects need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. See YouTube’s Live Redirect requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is two different prerecorded playlists running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping YouTube streams running without leaving a computer on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the matching YouTube stream key, and go live. For two playlists, use the appropriate separate event and feed configuration for each stream.
