You don’t upload one giant file to YouTube as a 24/7 live stream. A regular video upload and a continuous live broadcast are different workflows: for a live broadcast, an encoder sends prerecorded video to YouTube as a live feed. If you just want to publish a video, YouTube’s current upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.
Choose the right workflow
| What you want | Use this workflow | Key limit or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Publish a finished video people can watch on demand | Upload it in YouTube Studio as a regular video | YouTube Help sets the maximum at 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts are limited to 15-minute videos by default; verify your account to upload longer videos. |
| Keep prerecorded material broadcasting as a live channel | Send it through an encoder to a YouTube live stream | The encoder needs the YouTube stream URL and key. The upload file-size limit is not a universal limit on encoder-fed broadcasts. |
YouTube documents software and standalone hardware encoders, but does not prescribe one official method for looping local prerecorded files. You need an encoder or playout system that can feed the media continuously; do not assume that uploading a file alone will make it loop live.
Upload a large video as a regular YouTube video
For a conventional on-demand upload, use YouTube Studio’s upload flow. These current YouTube Help limits and recovery instructions apply to regular uploads, not live-stream restarts.
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create → Upload videos, and choose the finished video file.
- If the video is longer than 15 minutes, verify the account before uploading. YouTube’s Help guidance says verified accounts can upload longer videos.
- For files larger than 20 GB, YouTube’s desktop upload guidance advises using an up-to-date browser.
- Keep the file at or below 256 GB and 12 hours. If it exceeds 256 GB, YouTube recommends compressing it and names H.264 as an option for reducing file size while maintaining quality.
- Complete the video details and visibility choices in Studio, then wait for processing to finish before sharing the video.
Upload time depends on file size, format, connection bandwidth, network traffic and video quality; YouTube notes that 4K files take longer to upload than 1080p files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the upload stalls
If a regular upload is interrupted, return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file to continue where it left off. That recovery procedure resumes an upload; it does not restart a live broadcast. If an account that used to upload long videos can no longer do so, YouTube advises checking for copyright claims or strikes. If you verified only after a failed long-video attempt, YouTube says you must upload the video again.
Send prerecorded video as a YouTube live stream
The basic workflow is to create a live event in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder or playout system with YouTube’s connection details, and send the feed. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube Help.

- Enable live streaming and prepare the media. Allow time for YouTube’s first-time live-stream enablement. Prepare the file or playlist in an encoder or playout system capable of feeding prerecorded media; YouTube’s live-stream documentation does not specify one official looping setup.
- Create the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the connection details. Get the stream URL and key from Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Keep the key private. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting it.
- Set the output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate the encoder can sustain over your upstream connection. YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS.
- Check encoder timing and bitrate. Use constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use YouTube’s full live-encoder table for other output settings.
- Test before broadcasting. Run a connection speed test, start sending the encoder feed, and wait for the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room. Select Go live if the stream is not set to start automatically.
- Monitor the feed. Keep an eye on stream health while live. The recommended bitrate is a starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service; what your connection can sustain depends on the selected output settings and available upstream bandwidth.
YouTube transcodes a live feed into different output formats for viewers. For exact supported settings and bitrate recommendations beyond the examples above, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its archive
A continuous live channel and a saved replay are separate concerns. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full program matters, record a local archive as a backup. A 24/7 broadcast should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy.

Before leaving a stream unattended, test the entire playback and encoder path. YouTube’s cited live-stream guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health, but does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or specify a universal connection speed or redundancy design.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having permission to upload a video does not automatically mean you have the rights to broadcast every included song, clip or image as a live stream. Check that you own or have the necessary rights to all material in the file and playlist, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before running a continuous channel. Copyright claims or strikes can also affect an account’s ability to upload long videos.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to run the encoder continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the media from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You can’t start a live stream | Live streaming has not been enabled for the account yet | If this is the first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for enablement, then try again. |
| The encoder does not connect | Incorrect destination, stream URL or key | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the encoder’s destination settings, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The preview is unstable or stream health is poor | Output settings exceed what the upstream connection can sustain, or the connection is inconsistent | Test the connection, match bitrate to resolution and frame rate, and check stream health before and during the broadcast. |
| A long regular upload fails or cannot resume | The file may exceed the upload cap, the browser may be out of date, or the resume window may have passed | Check the 256 GB / 12-hour limit, update the browser for files over 20 GB, and resume at youtube.com/upload within 24 hours using the same file. |
| A 24/7 broadcast has no complete replay | The stream ran longer than YouTube’s reliable automatic-archive window | Keep a local recording if you need a full archive; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. |
