1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to join compatible clips into one local file without re-encoding, then play that file through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. The no-re-encode method works only when the clips have matching streams and parameters; if they do not, normalize and export them first. You can also skip creating a joined file and send prerecorded video through a suitable encoder or cloud service.
Check whether your clips can be joined without re-encoding
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join clips by copying their existing streams, but it does not make mismatched media compatible. The files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Differing stream lengths can also leave gaps, and incorrect duration information can cause artifacts. Check the clip order and properties before starting, then play through the finished file and inspect every transition.
Join compatible videos with FFmpeg
1. Put the clips in order
Place the clips in the sequence you want and note their filenames. Keep them in one folder for a straightforward file list. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping in the list.
2. Create the concat list
In a plain-text file named list.txt, put the required header on the first line, followed by one file entry per clip:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'
Replace the example names and order with your own. The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically.
3. Create the joined file
Run this command from the folder containing list.txt and the clips:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy joined.mp4
-c copy copies the streams instead of re-encoding them, so this is the quick option when the inputs meet the compatibility requirements. It is not a conversion step. If FFmpeg reports incompatible streams or the result has glitches, do not assume the join is sound just because a file was created.

4. Verify the output
Play joined.mp4 from beginning to end, paying particular attention to the boundaries between clips. Check for missing or delayed audio, black frames, timestamp gaps, abrupt jumps, and duration errors. FFmpeg’s concat documentation warns that incorrect duration information can lead to artifacts.

If FFmpeg cannot join the clips cleanly
When the clips differ in codec, time base, resolution, frame rate, or audio layout, make their output characteristics consistent before joining. You can normalize them with FFmpeg or export them from a video editor using one matching preset, then try the concat workflow again. Re-encoding takes more processing time and produces a new exported file, but it is the practical route when stream-copy compatibility is absent. The exact adjustment depends on the properties of your files, so test the output rather than relying on a single preset for every source.
Send the joined file to YouTube Live
1. Confirm that the channel can stream
YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. These eligibility and activation details are from YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026; check the current guidance if your account does not show live-streaming options.

2. Connect an encoder
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming. Open the joined file as the encoder’s media source; the exact controls for playing a file vary by encoder, so follow its current instructions. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
3. Preview, then go live
Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview and stream health before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends testing ahead of an event with representative audio and movement. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. That is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee against connection problems.

YouTube’s upload recommendations cover file uploads, including formats such as MP4, H.264, and AAC-LC audio. They are not a complete specification for a live encoder. YouTube publishes separate live encoder guidance for codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes; use those live recommendations when configuring the encoder rather than treating upload settings as a substitute.

Other ways to play prerecorded video as a live stream
Joining clips into one file is useful when you want a reusable local export, but it is not required for every prerecorded broadcast. YouTube’s encoder directory includes examples such as AJA HELO Plus hardware with scheduling and prerecorded-media streaming features, as well as cloud software services for continuous prerecorded streams. Those are separate workflows and may involve dedicated hardware or a service account.

Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg says streams do not match: Compare the clips’ codecs, time bases, resolution, frame rate, and audio layout. Normalize them to common output characteristics or export them from an editor, then join the normalized files.
- The command cannot find a clip: Check that each listed filename and relative path matches the actual file and that the command is being run from the expected folder. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters correctly.
- The joined file has a gap or glitch at a boundary: Check duration metadata and play each transition. Unequal stream lengths or incorrect duration information can affect timestamps; correct the source or normalize and re-export before using the file live.
- YouTube receives no video or shows the wrong source: Confirm that the encoder is playing
joined.mp4, that its server URL and stream key match the selected YouTube stream, and that the preview updates before going live. - The stream health is poor or the broadcast drops: Test the connection and encoder before the event, review YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and ensure upload capacity has the recommended 20% headroom over the stream bitrate.
- Live streaming is unavailable in Studio: Check channel verification and account eligibility, including whether a restriction occurred in the previous 90 days. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Joining files does not grant permission to broadcast them. Before streaming, confirm you have the rights or licenses for the video, music, and other material in every clip. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies can affect a channel even when the video is prerecorded or presented as a live stream; review YouTube’s current policies for your specific use and do not treat permission to download or edit a file as permission to broadcast it.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an archive, verify the resulting video after the broadcast; do not assume the live stream itself is a permanent backup.
