Sometimes—but an active livestream restriction means you cannot go live until it is lifted. YouTube says a copyright strike issued after an active livestream is removed for copyright restricts livestreaming for seven days; another copyright strike can extend the livestream restriction to 14 days. A strike on your account and a current livestream restriction are related but not identical, so check your channel’s status and the specific notice in YouTube Studio before scheduling a broadcast.
First check what kind of copyright notice you received
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a strike. A copyright strike follows a copyright removal request that results in content being removed. YouTube also handles Community Guidelines strikes separately, so read the notice rather than assuming every warning has the same effect. YouTube’s explanation of copyright strikes describes these distinctions.
| Notice or status | What it means for livestreaming | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | Typically not a strike by itself. A dispute without a valid basis could lead the rightsholder to submit a removal request; if that request is found valid, it may result in a strike. | Open the claim details and review the matched content, claimant and available actions. |
| Copyright strike | A copyright removal request resulted in content removal. If the removed content was an active livestream, YouTube says the channel’s live access is restricted for seven days; a subsequent copyright strike can mean a 14-day livestream restriction. | Check the strike notice, strike count and live-access status in YouTube Studio. |
| Community Guidelines strike or livestream restriction | This is a separate policy matter from a copyright strike. The channel’s current restriction—not the label you assume applies—determines whether you can go live. | Read the specific Studio notice and any listed end date or required action. |
The seven- and 14-day periods are YouTube’s stated consequences for copyright strikes associated with removal of an active livestream; they should not be treated as a universal duration for every copyright strike or every restriction. YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance also requires channel verification and no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. The channel-specific status and notice are decisive. See Get started with live streaming.
How to verify whether you can go live now
- Open YouTube Studio for the affected channel. Review its status and features and any copyright or livestream notices.
- Identify the notice type. Determine whether it is a Content ID claim, a copyright strike, or a Community Guidelines matter. Do not infer a live ban from a claim alone.
- Read the live-access restriction itself. Check whether livestreaming is disabled and whether YouTube gives an end date or an action to complete.
- Check the other eligibility conditions. YouTube says the channel needs verification and must have had no livestream restriction in the past 90 days. If either condition is not met, a strike’s age alone does not establish that you can stream.
- Wait until the restriction has ended before trying to broadcast. Do not use another channel to stream while the affected account is restricted. YouTube prohibits using another channel to get around an active livestream restriction; circumvention may lead to account termination.
These checks are useful whether you stream from a mobile device, webcam, encoder or console: the production method does not override channel eligibility.

What to do about a copyright strike
YouTube identifies three routes for resolving a copyright strike. Choose based on the facts of the removal, not simply on a desire to regain live access quickly. YouTube’s strike guidance explains the available options.
Complete Copyright School and wait for expiry
A strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School, provided the channel has fewer than three copyright strikes. This is a strike-resolution route; check the Studio notice separately for the end of any livestream restriction.

Ask the claimant to retract the removal request
You may contact the claimant to seek a retraction if you believe the removal was mistaken or can resolve the rights issue. A request is not a guarantee that the claimant will retract it. YouTube’s guidance on copyright removal requests explains the process.
Submit a counter notification only when legally justified
A counter notification is a legal request, not an informal appeal. Consider it only if the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for a copyright exception. If YouTube forwards it to the requester, the requester has 10 US working days to provide evidence of legal action. Do not submit one casually or make assertions you cannot support.

Understand the risk of multiple strikes
YouTube says three copyright strikes can make a channel subject to termination. Review the account’s active strikes and the timing before deciding how to respond; the expiry route described above applies only when there are fewer than three strikes.
Does Indian fair dealing let you livestream the material?
India’s Copyright Act, 1957 includes exceptions to infringement under section 52, including fair dealing for specified purposes. That does not mean every educational, commentary, review or other livestream automatically qualifies. Whether an exception applies depends on the actual use and circumstances, and the existence of a possible legal exception does not itself compel YouTube to restore a removed stream or lift a platform restriction. The Copyright Office, Government of India’s exceptions material sets out the statutory context. For a consequential dispute, get qualified India-specific legal advice.

How to reduce the risk of another interruption
YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Use content you own, have permission to use, or have carefully assessed as covered by an applicable copyright exception.
- If you have a licence, ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist where needed. A licence alone may not prevent an automated match.
- If you archive a livestream, remember that the archived video may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.
- Keep copies of licences, permissions and correspondence so you can assess a notice against the rights you actually have.
Or let it run in the cloud
Once your channel is eligible to livestream, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not bypass a YouTube restriction, and a copyright strike or claim can still affect content or channel access. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
