You can stream 4K at 60 frames per second to YouTube Live from a VPS if the server can encode the source in real time and sustain the required outbound bitrate. For a standard RTMPS stream, configure 3840 × 2160 progressive video, 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1 at 4K60; those are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can keep up.
What a VPS must handle for 4K60
A 4K60 stream has two separate workloads: encoding each frame quickly enough to maintain 60 fps, and sending the resulting stream to YouTube without interruptions. A VPS can have enough network capacity but fail to encode in real time, or encode successfully but lack sustained outbound throughput or transfer allowance.
YouTube does not specify a universal VPS CPU, GPU, or RAM requirement. The needed compute depends on whether your input is already encoded video or raw/uncompressed input that the VPS must resize and encode, as well as the codec, encoder preset, and any filters. Benchmark the actual workload on the VPS you intend to use.
Check the source and server before configuring YouTube
- Identify whether the source is an existing 4K60 encoded file/feed or needs resizing and encoding on the VPS.
- Confirm that the deployed encoder supports your selected codec, preset, and RTMPS transport. If using hardware encoding, confirm that the VPS actually provides access to a compatible encoder.
- Measure sustained outbound throughput and check the provider’s data-transfer limits. Leave headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variability.
- Test the route from the VPS region to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A VPS plan’s advertised port speed alone does not establish that it can sustain your stream.
Choose a protocol: RTMPS for ordinary streams, HLS for specific needs
| Protocol | When it fits | Important requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | The usual starting choice for a conventional live stream where lower latency matters. | Encrypted RTMP delivery. Use a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, and allow outbound TCP port 443. YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| HLS | Consider it when HEVC/HDR support or high-resolution delivery is more important than lower latency and your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements. | Video and audio must be muxed in M2TS; video may be H.264 or HEVC, audio must be AAC, frame rates up to 60 fps are supported, and the GOP must be closed. YouTube recommends segments of one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds. Segment-based HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC. |
For a first VPS setup, RTMPS is generally simpler. YouTube also documents DASH ingest, but it is not needed for this workflow unless your encoder explicitly supports it and you have a reason to use it. Ingest protocol describes how the encoder sends video to YouTube; it is distinct from the formats YouTube later uses to deliver playback to viewers.

Set YouTube’s recommended 4K60 encoder settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, use a supported video codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, a two-second interval is a 120-frame GOP when the encoder expresses GOP length in frames.

The figures are YouTube Help’s published encoder guidance; the consulted page does not state a publication year. They describe the outgoing media stream, not a VPS plan specification or a guaranteed quality result. Set network capacity above your selected video bitrate to accommodate audio and variation, then verify sustained egress under load. YouTube’s settings are documented at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Audio and color
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 color. For HDR in the documented settings, YouTube recommends HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR in those settings.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Prepare the VPS. Install or configure an encoder build that supports your chosen codec and RTMPS transport. Confirm the VPS can sustain real-time 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps with the actual input, preset, and filters. Do not assume a provider’s CPU or GPU label proves this.
- Check outbound networking. Verify sustained throughput and provider egress limits against the video bitrate plus audio and headroom. For RTMPS, ensure outbound TCP port 443 is allowed.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream, or use the ingestion fields for an API-created stream. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key permits manual selection. Follow the current Control Room prompts for the stream’s visibility and event setup.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret. Do not put it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or repositories. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
- Configure the encoder output. Select 3840 × 2160 progressive at 60 fps, a supported codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. For RTMPS, enter the valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, and use AAC or MP3 audio. If the encoder asks for GOP length in frames, use 120 for the two-second interval at 60 fps.
- Run a controlled test. Test privately, unlisted, or in another controlled setup with movement and audio representative of the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health before making the event public.
YouTube documents RTMPS connection requirements at Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. The LiveStreams API describes supported ingestion settings and health diagnostics at LiveStreams.

Verify stream health before and during the event
Run an upload speed test and compare the sustained result with the bitrate you selected; YouTube explicitly recommends testing upload bitrate. During the controlled test and live event, monitor YouTube’s stream health for warnings such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe/GOP problems, missing audio, or video-ingestion starvation. A correct resolution setting cannot compensate for a VPS that falls behind or loses network capacity.
- Bitrate warning: check actual encoder output and sustained VPS egress; confirm the provider has not imposed a transfer or throughput limit.
- Frame-rate mismatch or dropped frames: check whether the encoder can sustain 60 fps with the real source, codec, preset, and filters. Reduce processing load or use an encoder/VPS combination that passes the real-time test.
- GOP/keyframe warning: verify CBR and the two-second keyframe interval; ensure the encoder is not emitting intervals longer than YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Missing audio: confirm an audio track is selected, the audio codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and the encoder is sending it to the same ingest session.
- Ingestion starvation or disconnects: verify the endpoint and application path, port 443 access, VPS network stability, and sustained throughput. Re-test after any configuration change.
Common VPS planning mistakes
Choosing a VPS from its advertised bitrate alone
Advertised network capacity does not prove sustained egress on the route to YouTube, nor does it include provider transfer caps. Test the stream itself and confirm the plan’s recurring data allowance.

Assuming every “4K” input needs the same encoding power
Sending an already encoded file is not the same workload as scaling or encoding raw input. Even two encoded sources can differ in the work required by the chosen preset and filters. Use a representative test rather than a generic CPU, GPU, or RAM rule; YouTube does not publish a universal VPS sizing specification.
Copying an FFmpeg command without matching the environment
A command that works on one server may fail on another because FFmpeg builds, hardware acceleration, input type, encoder availability, and RTMPS URL format differ. This guide does not prescribe a universal command: first verify the deployed build and test the exact source, codec, preset, transport, and destination configuration.
