First find out whether OBS is actually overloaded. In OBS, open View → Stats, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream-health and encoder messages. Encoding or rendering trouble calls for reducing OBS’s workload or using a compatible hardware encoder; network-dropped frames call for fixing upload capacity or connection stability. Changing CPU settings will not repair an unstable internet connection.
Identify what is dropping frames
OBS and YouTube can show different symptoms, so check both before changing settings. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide distinguishes network drops from performance trouble: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” OBS’s encoding performance guidance also recommends checking CPU load and encoder errors when output looks or sounds poor.
- Encoding overload or choppy local output: investigate software-encoding load and scene rendering.
- Network dropped frames or disconnections: investigate upload capacity and connection stability, even if the local encode looks healthy.
- Unclear symptoms: note the OBS statistics and YouTube encoder messages during a representative stream before making changes.
A 24/7 runtime alone does not identify the fault. The official guidance does not establish a special CPU threshold, temperature limit, or failure rate for continuous streams.
Reduce OBS workload before buying hardware
Change one setting at a time, then check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. The right compromise depends on the quality you need and the capability of your system.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lower output resolution or frame rate
Reducing output resolution and frame rate lowers the work OBS must do. If 60 fps is not sustainable, test 30 fps. Keep the input video’s resolution in mind: reducing output quality may make fine detail less clear, but it can be preferable to an unstable stream. OBS outlines these steps in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
Simplify scenes
Remove or simplify scene elements you do not need, such as unnecessary sources and visual effects. Scenes can create rendering work as well as encoding work, so a hardware encoder will not necessarily solve a rendering bottleneck. Retest after each simplification.

Use a hardware encoder if CPU software encoding is the bottleneck
If diagnostics point to CPU-heavy software encoding, check whether OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder for your GPU and use it for a test stream. OBS explains that hardware encoding moves work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. YouTube likewise notes that NVIDIA GPUs include NVENC, which can encode without using the CPU; availability depends on supported hardware and settings. See the OBS hardware encoding guidance and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Compare stability and image quality in the test rather than assuming every hardware encoder or preset will behave the same way. A new GPU or standalone encoder is worth considering only after you have confirmed that encoding load is the problem and checked hardware compatibility. YouTube lists standalone encoders in its live encoder guidance, but the reviewed documentation does not identify a particular model for this situation.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, with settings for frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the row for your exact streaming mode rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different setup.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the streaming encoder and bitrate controls.
- Open Settings → Video and confirm the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.
- Set codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate to values supported by YouTube for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm the corresponding controls and labels for your selected OBS encoder.
- Run a test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics.
Encoder controls can differ by OBS version and selected encoder. If a setting is not available, do not assume a different setting is equivalent; check the encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s current table.

Check upload capacity when OBS reports network drops
Test outbound upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend reliable connectivity and approximately 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. That margin helps leave room for variation in the connection; it does not guarantee stability.
- If measured upload capacity is constrained or varies, lower the stream bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, using YouTube’s recommendation for your mode.
- If drops persist, troubleshoot the connection or contact your ISP. OBS notes that a connection that cannot maintain the configured bitrate can cause dropped frames.
- Do not buy a GPU to solve a connection problem: encoding hardware cannot make an unstable upload route reliable.
Test the full continuous-stream workflow
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream quality. Test with representative audio, movement, scenes, encoder settings, and upload conditions. For a continuous channel, observe the system under the intended operating conditions and check both local output and YouTube stream health. The cited platform guidance does not prescribe a universal CPU percentage or test duration for a 24/7 stream.
