For a stable YouTube stream using H.264 in OBS, start with CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and choose a video bitrate based on your resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are encoder recommendations—not a promise your connection can sustain them—so test with representative movement and audio before going live.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution and frame rate

The table shows YouTube’s current live-ingestion guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. The values are Mbps and vary by video codec; use the row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. Minimum is not the same as recommended. These are for a live encoder feed, not for encoding a prerecorded video upload.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 / H.265 minimum AV1 / H.265 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

Source for every table value: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.” If you use H.264, the practical reference points are 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60.

Which bitrate should you choose?

Match quality to your connection

Choose the resolution and frame rate the content needs, then check whether your actual upload connection can reliably carry the corresponding bitrate along with other network traffic. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and selecting a reliable setting for the connection; a speed-test result alone does not guarantee stable performance throughout a stream. If the connection fluctuates or is shared, start lower and validate rather than assuming the published recommended rate will work.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose frame rate for the content

Use 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your encoder and connection can sustain it. For mostly static scenes, talk, music, or slides, 30 fps may be a more practical choice. At 1080p, moving from 60 fps to 30 fps changes YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrate from 17 Mbps to 14 Mbps; reducing frame rate is therefore one option if the higher setting is not sustainable.

Do not mix live and upload bitrate tables

YouTube publishes separate guidance for live ingestion and prerecorded uploads. Use the live encoder table above for an OBS stream; an upload-file recommendation is not a substitute.

OBS encoder settings for YouTube

OBS control names and available encoder choices can vary by version and selected hardware or software encoder. Set the equivalent options exposed by your chosen encoder; do not assume every OBS installation has an identical menu.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended by YouTube for live encoding.
  • Bitrate: Set the value appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate in the table. For example, use 17,000 Kbps for H.264 1080p60 or 14,000 Kbps for H.264 1080p30 if the connection can reliably sustain it.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Video: Use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube’s guidance also lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC entropy coding where supported by the encoder.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed audio codecs. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling, 128 Kbps for stereo, and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround.
  • Ingest protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS; RTMPS is its secure extension to RTMP. H.264 over RTMPS is a compatibility-oriented starting point. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1, so use the corresponding bitrate column if you select one of those codecs.

YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default in Live Control Room and transcodes streams into multiple output formats. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings. OBS Project notes that a consistent keyframe interval can help automatic quality-option transitions happen without interruption; YouTube’s 2-second recommendation is the controlling setting for this setup. See OBS Project’s streaming documentation.

Test the stream before the event

  1. Pick the target. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and codec, then use the matching live-ingestion bitrate recommendation as a starting point.
  2. Check upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test on the network and device you will use for the broadcast. Account for other traffic that may share the connection; YouTube does not provide a universal upload-headroom percentage.
  3. Run a representative test. Test before the event with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically recommends including both in the test.
  4. Adjust if unstable. If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. A lower sustainable feed is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly falters.
  5. Monitor while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages during the broadcast and respond to warnings rather than relying only on OBS showing that it is connected.

Latency is a separate trade-off

Bitrate and latency solve different problems: bitrate affects the data rate and picture quality, while latency affects how quickly viewers see the stream. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Its guidance says 2160p/4K has no low-latency option and runs at normal latency. Choose latency based on how much real-time interaction matters, not as a fix for an unstable upload connection. See YouTube Help’s stream settings and latency guidance.

Troubleshooting unstable YouTube streams

Symptom Likely issue to check What to try
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers The upload connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate, or other traffic may be competing for it. Check upload speed on the streaming connection, reduce bitrate or output quality, and repeat a representative test.
OBS reports dropped frames Network delivery may be inconsistent; this differs from an encoder struggling to render frames. Check the connection and competing traffic, then test a lower bitrate or resolution. Monitor YouTube’s health messages as well.
Video looks soft or blocky The chosen bitrate may be too low for the resolution, frame rate, and amount of motion. Compare your setting with YouTube’s recommended value for the matching codec and format. Raise it only if the upload line can sustain it.
Quality options switch poorly or interrupt viewers Keyframe cadence may not be consistent. Use the recommended 2-second interval and keep it consistent; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Viewers experience more buffering after latency is lowered Lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a higher-latency mode if interaction does not require the shortest delay, and treat connection stability separately.

If Wi-Fi instability is the suspected local cause, testing over a wired Ethernet connection can help determine whether the wireless link is involved. It will not fix ISP congestion or an upload connection that lacks capacity.
