If your YouTube live stream drops on Wi-Fi, first connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and run an unlisted test using the same settings and content. If the wired stream stays stable, focus on Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or competing devices. If it still drops, check outbound upload capacity, encoder health, and computer load before escalating to your internet provider.
Does Ethernet stop YouTube live stream drops?
It may, if the wireless link is the weak point. YouTube recommends an Ethernet cable connection for live streaming from a computer. A wired test is also the clearest way to separate Wi-Fi trouble from issues elsewhere in the streaming chain.
- Connect the encoder computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Use a cable long enough to reach safely; no particular brand or model is required.
- Start an unlisted YouTube stream as a setup test. Keep the location, video, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the same as on Wi-Fi, as far as possible.
- Watch the encoder preview and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during the test.
- Compare the result with a Wi-Fi run under similar conditions. If wired is stable and Wi-Fi is not, investigate the wireless segment. If both fail, continue with upload and encoder checks.
YouTube’s recommendation to use Ethernet is in its live filming tips; YouTube also recommends an unlisted stream for testing equipment. A wired connection does not correct an ISP outage, inadequate upload capacity, or an encoder problem.
If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not
Check the encoder’s distance from the router, walls or other obstructions, and whether other devices are using the network heavily. Try reducing interference and competing network use, then repeat the test. These are diagnostic steps for the local wireless connection, not guaranteed fixes for YouTube ingestion. YouTube’s general video playback troubleshooting discusses interference and competing devices in the viewer context.

How much upload speed does a 24/7 stream need?
Size the stream around measured, sustained outbound upload capacity—not download speed or the internet plan’s headline figure. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth can be higher than outbound and that shared household or office use can reduce what is available to the encoder.
YouTube recommends allowing capacity for the primary stream, backup stream, and an additional 20% of headroom. The total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. These are recommendations, not a reliability guarantee; leave more margin if the connection fluctuates.

- Run an upload speed test from the encoder’s network connection. Test when the network is quiet and again when it is busy.
- Compare the sustained upload result with the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream, plus the recommended headroom.
- If capacity is marginal or varies, lower the stream bitrate or resolution/frame rate and test again. Do not select the top of a published range simply because it is available.
- If upload tests point to an upstream problem, contact your ISP and ask about outbound capacity and connection stability at your location.
YouTube’s filming tips for live streams and streaming tips cover upload needs, headroom, and shared-network limits.
Choose a bitrate that fits the connection
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, on the encoder settings page accessed October 3, 2026, include these 30 fps values. They are published ranges, not mandatory targets for every stream; choose settings the actual connection can sustain.

How to tell Wi-Fi trouble from encoder trouble
Compare what the encoder shows with YouTube’s stream health. If the feed already looks or sounds wrong in the encoder preview, investigate the source, encoder configuration, or computer. If the local feed looks healthy but YouTube reports a problem, check the outbound internet connection and stream health messages.

- Update the encoder software and review its preview and logs for errors.
- Check CPU load while streaming. High load can affect the locally encoded feed.
- Review Live Control Room warnings, including buffering or keyframe messages, rather than relying only on whether the encoder says it is connected.
- Run an upload test from the same connection. If it indicates an internet connection problem, YouTube advises contacting the ISP.
YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting distinguishes an unhealthy encoder feed from a healthy local feed that fails on the outbound connection.
Verify encoder settings
For YouTube’s published guidance, use RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Match the bitrate to available upload rather than automatically choosing the maximum for a resolution. Consult the official encoder settings page when configuring or checking the current recommendations.

A continuous stream needs more than a successful connection at startup. Test with representative audio and video, monitor it during operation, and decide how an outage will be detected and handled. YouTube recommends checking the stream before going live, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying a local archive if you record one.
- Preview the stream and check the Live Control Room’s health messages before relying on the setup.
- If recording locally, confirm the archive file continues to grow and can be played back.
- Test backup encoder rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the backup takes over.
- Plan who—or what process—will notice a drop and restart or recover the encoder. YouTube’s guidance covers failover testing, but does not prescribe one universal unattended 24/7 recovery system.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for preparation and failover testing.

If you stream uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option for a YouTube channel: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a home computer does not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
