YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Keeps Dropping: How to Troubleshoot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube live stream bitrate keeps dropping, first check whether the encoder is losing frames or viewers are only experiencing playback problems. Then measure stable upload capacity, leave headroom, and match the encoder bitrate to what your connection can sustain. Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi; if the encoder is healthy but outbound connectivity is not, contact your ISP.

First, identify what is actually dropping

Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health alongside your encoder’s statistics. A viewer’s buffering report does not by itself show that your outgoing bitrate is falling: playback can be affected by the viewer’s own connection or device.

Look for dropped-frame indicators and encoder warnings. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide). If the local preview and recording look normal but the live stream does not, investigate the outbound network path first.

Check upload capacity and leave room for network changes

Measure upload performance, not just download speed. A fast download result does not establish that your connection can reliably send a live stream. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the encoder (YouTube’s streaming tips).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Run an upload speed test while the connection is being used in conditions similar to your usual stream.
  • Check whether another stream, large upload, cloud backup, game download, or household device is competing for bandwidth.
  • Use stable upload performance as your limit, not the best number from a single test. Speed tests are snapshots and do not guarantee sustained throughput.

Set the encoder bitrate to a level the connection can sustain

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose the bitrate row that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. The values below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not a guarantee that a connection can sustain them:

Video format H.264 recommendation AV1/H.265 recommendation
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps 24 Mbps

Use YouTube’s current table for other formats and its minimum settings; recommendations can change. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Confirm the current requirements in the official settings table before changing encoder fields.

OBS offers a different starting point: 75% of total upload speed. That is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube requirement. Treat it as a starting estimate only, and reconcile it with YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation, measured stable upload, and the headroom your connection needs (OBS Project). If your configured bitrate is beyond what the connection sustains, reduce it or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then monitor stream health again.

Separate network trouble from encoding or source trouble

Check encoder error messages and CPU load, and compare the live preview with a local recording. A strained encoder or a problematic source can cause issues that resemble a network problem.

  • If the local recording or preview is also poor, inspect encoder load, source quality, and the encoder’s configuration; update the encoder software.
  • If the local recording is healthy but the stream has dropped frames, prioritize upload stability and the connection to YouTube’s ingest server.
  • If stream health points to a specific error, use YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide to interpret it.

Test the connection path before replacing equipment

If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection and compare the results. This can help isolate wireless instability, but it will not fix an ISP, routing, or other network fault.

Also check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-priority utility, or outdated network driver could be interfering with the stream. OBS notes that dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may reduce video quality.

Restart or investigate the modem or router when symptoms point to local equipment trouble. Cables, network cards, routers, and modems can be fault points, but replace hardware only when troubleshooting provides a reason. If upload tests continue to show an outbound problem while the encoder appears healthy, contact your ISP.

Common symptoms and the next useful check

What you observe What to check next
YouTube or OBS reports dropped frames Compare configured bitrate with stable upload capacity; check congestion and try Ethernet.
Download speed is high, but the stream struggles Measure upload performance and check how much capacity is left after other devices’ use.
Viewers report buffering, but encoder statistics look normal Check YouTube stream health; viewer playback trouble alone does not establish an encoder-side bitrate drop.
Local recording is clean, but the live feed is not Focus on upload stability, the network path, and the connection to the ingest server.
The stream improves on Ethernet Investigate Wi-Fi stability; a wired test does not rule out ISP or routing problems.

Or let it run in the cloud
