What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If OBS reports encoding overloaded or shows rendering lag, first reduce the work OBS must do: free GPU capacity, lower output resolution or frame rate, and simplify scenes. If OBS instead reports dropped frames, troubleshoot the network connection to YouTube; bitrate changes do not directly fix a GPU rendering bottleneck. These symptoms have different causes, and continuous streams need both a stable OBS workload and a reliable connection.
First identify which problem OBS is reporting
Before changing settings, open OBS’s View > Stats window and note whether the issue is rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. The exact labels can vary by OBS version. You can also review the OBS log after a session for details about the active encoder and performance warnings.
- Encoding overloaded or encoding lag: OBS is struggling to encode frames on the selected encoder.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite scenes quickly enough. Scene composition uses GPU resources, even when encoding is handled by a hardware encoder.
- Dropped frames: OBS is having trouble delivering data to YouTube’s ingest server, commonly because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
OBS treats performance pressure and dropped frames as distinct problems. Use its encoding performance troubleshooting guide for rendering or encoding issues, and its stream connection troubleshooting guide for network drops.
Fix rendering or encoding overload in order
Change one setting at a time, then test with representative scenes and motion for long enough to see whether the same warning returns. That makes it easier to identify which change helped.

1. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator
Close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS. This step is specific to Windows.
2. Close other GPU-heavy apps
Check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS for applications using substantial GPU resources. Close only apps you recognize and do not need during the stream. A game may appear to run smoothly while leaving too little GPU headroom for OBS to render its scenes.
3. Reduce the output resolution
In OBS, open Settings > Video and lower Output (Scaled) Resolution. Lowering the stream output can reduce the work required to encode it. Test the result at the intended frame rate before making further changes.

4. Reduce frame rate if necessary
In Settings > Video, try 30 fps if 60 fps is not sustainable. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding load. The lower rate may be a worthwhile trade-off for a continuous stream that otherwise accumulates lag.

Remove or disable sources, filters, browser elements, and effects that are not needed in the live scene. Simplifying scene composition can reduce GPU rendering pressure; switching to a hardware encoder does not eliminate that work.
6. Consider the base canvas only if other changes are not enough
Lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution in Settings > Video can reduce demands further, but it also changes the workspace used to lay out sources. OBS cautions that this complicates source positioning. If you try it, consider creating a separate scene collection and repositioning sources there rather than disrupting a layout you still need.

Choose an encoder with the actual bottleneck in mind
OBS supports hardware encoding options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware, operating-system, and configuration compatibility. A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work to a specialized component and reduce CPU load. It does not guarantee that OBS will have enough GPU capacity for scene composition.
In OBS, inspect Settings > Output > Streaming for the available encoder choices; the choices depend on your system and OBS configuration. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, it may be worth testing against software encoding while monitoring OBS Stats and stream health. Image quality at a given bitrate can vary by vendor and generation, and earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality than newer ones. Apple’s VideoToolbox support also differs between Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. See the OBS hardware encoding guide for compatibility notes.
Do not buy a specific GPU solely because OBS reports overload. First identify the current CPU and GPU, selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and OBS log details. A GPU with a suitable hardware video encoder is a conditional upgrade to consider only if the existing system lacks a compatible option or still cannot sustain the stream after configuration changes.

Set YouTube ingest settings without confusing bitrate and performance
YouTube’s published encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default, and recommends testing with audio and video motion similar to the real stream while monitoring stream health and its messages.
| H.264 profile | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest figures, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the profile that matches your codec and output. A bitrate that is too demanding for your connection can contribute to dropped frames; lowering it is a network remedy, not a direct fix for OBS rendering lag or encoding overload.

If OBS’s main symptom is dropped frames, check the connection path to YouTube rather than lowering game graphics or assuming a stronger GPU will help.

- Confirm the configured bitrate is within the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably, with headroom for ordinary variation.
- Check whether the connection is stable throughout the stream, not just during a brief speed test.
- Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps and monitor whether dropped frames continue after each change.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health messages; they can help distinguish ingest or delivery trouble from local OBS performance issues.
Keep a continuous stream operationally stable
Continuous operation requires more than a successful start. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality, checking that the local archive file continues to grow when you are recording one, and verifying that viewers can access the event. Its encoder setup guidance also describes continuous-stream capability for certain listed encoders. These operational checks can reveal interruptions or quality problems, but they do not replace fixing an OBS performance bottleneck.
- Test with the same scenes, motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate expected during the continuous stream.
- Keep OBS Stats and YouTube stream health visible during setup and periodically during operation.
- If you are recording locally as well, check that the archive file is growing rather than assuming a recording is being saved correctly.
- Verify the live event is accessible as intended; a healthy local preview alone does not establish that viewers can watch it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video playing on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo avoids leaving a home computer, OBS, or home internet connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.
Each slot supports one always-on YouTube stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Every plan has the same product; only the billing period changes. The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
Monthly: $9.99 per month
