Can You Use Royalty-Free Music in a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—but only if the track’s actual license covers continuous YouTube livestreaming. “Royalty-free” does not automatically mean that a song is cleared for a 24/7 broadcast, monetization, every territory, or an archived replay. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and even licensed music may interrupt a stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID.

What a 24/7 music license needs to cover

Read the license grant, not just the library’s “royalty-free” or “free” label. YouTube says safe music is public-domain music or music you have permission to use from its copyright owner. Giving credit in a description does not establish that permission or prevent a Content ID match. YouTube’s tips for finding safe music explain this distinction.

For a third-party track, check that the license explicitly covers:

  • Live broadcasting on YouTube: permission for ordinary online videos may not include livestreaming.
  • Continuous use: confirm the license permits uninterrupted or recurring 24/7 broadcasts, rather than assuming a short-use grant covers an always-on stream.
  • Territories: YouTube’s live-content terms put responsibility on creators to hold the necessary rights worldwide.
  • Monetization: verify commercial or monetized streaming is permitted if you plan to earn revenue.
  • Duration and attribution: check how long the grant lasts and whether credit or other conditions apply.
  • Archived replay: confirm the license also covers the saved video-on-demand (VOD), if you keep an archive.
  • Content ID handling: ask whether the rights holder can add your channel to its allowlist.

YouTube’s live-streaming terms make the creator responsible for obtaining the rights needed for live content. A license for one use, country, or format should not be treated as worldwide clearance for a continuous stream.

Where to get music—and what to verify

Music source What YouTube says What to check for a 24/7 stream
YouTube Audio Library YouTube identifies Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe and says rights holders will not claim its Audio Library music through Content ID. YouTube says it knows only its Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music and disclaims responsibility for issues from other libraries. Source Check the individual track’s license type and attribution requirement. Creative Commons tracks require attribution; standard Audio Library tracks can be filtered to show those that do not. The help page does not expressly address 24/7 broadcast duration, so verify the terms for your specific use.
Creator Music YouTube says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, and its track terms exclude live streams. Source Do not treat a Creator Music license as clearance for the live broadcast.
Third-party royalty-free library YouTube says third-party library music can still be flagged; the license usually specifies where and how it may be used. Source Verify livestreaming, continuity, archives, territories, monetization, duration, attribution, and the rights holder’s Content ID allowlisting process.
Your own or public-domain music YouTube identifies music you created and public-domain music as possible copyright-safe routes, provided you hold the relevant rights. Source For a public-domain composition, separately confirm that the particular recording is also cleared. A public-domain composition does not automatically make every recording of it public domain.

How YouTube can interrupt a live stream

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the material. If the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

For music you have licensed from a third party, YouTube advises asking the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted even when you have a license if your channel is not allowlisted. Allowlisting is platform-side coordination; it is not a substitute for having the necessary license.

If you keep a replay

When you choose to archive a live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims on the archived stream are made after the live stream ends. Treat the VOD as a separate use to clear: check that the license covers both the broadcast and its saved replay.

A practical clearance checklist before going live

  1. Identify the exact recording. Record the track title, version, recording, and rights holder. For public-domain music, distinguish the composition from the specific recording.
  2. Read the applicable license. Look for explicit permission for YouTube livestreams, continuous use, your intended territories, monetization, duration, attribution, and archived VODs.
  3. Get written clarification if a term is unclear. Ask the rights holder whether the grant covers a 24/7 YouTube stream and whether it can allowlist your channel in Content ID.
  4. Complete the allowlisting request before launch. Provide the channel information the rights holder requests and confirm that the channel has been added. A license alone may not stop live detection.
  5. Keep proof of permission. Save the license, purchase or permission records, attribution details, and allowlisting confirmation so you can refer to them if a claim or interruption occurs.
  6. Review the archive separately. If you retain the replay, confirm that the same license covers the VOD and follow any attribution conditions.

Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on

If the music is cleared and you want a prerecorded video or playlist to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and it does not provide music rights—clear the audio separately and arrange any required Content ID allowlisting.
