How to Use FFmpeg to Stream 4K 60fps to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a file to YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps with FFmpeg, encode it to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your codec, and publish to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in your Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps video; for H.265 or AV1, it recommends 35 Mbps. Those settings do not guarantee your computer can encode in real time or your internet connection can sustain the stream, so test with representative video and audio before relying on it.

Choose a codec and bitrate for 2160p60

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the video stream, not a guarantee of real-time encoding or a measurement of what your connection can sustain.

Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate at 2160p60 When to consider it
H.264 50 Mbps A conventional choice if your FFmpeg build can encode the source at 4K60 in real time and your viewers’ playback devices support it.
H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps Consider it if your encoder and intended playback devices support HEVC. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR.
AV1 35 Mbps Consider it only when your encoder and intended playback devices support AV1. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

For a conventional SDR stream, YouTube’s guidance calls for progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends AAC or MP3 audio, with 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo as recommended audio settings. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Leave upload headroom above the video bitrate: audio and network transport overhead add to the total, and a connection that merely matches the video target is not a safe target. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing settings that work reliably on the connection. For 4K live streams, the low-latency option is unavailable; YouTube optimizes them for normal latency.

Prepare your YouTube stream details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key in the stream settings. The ingest details are specific to your account and stream; there is no universal working key.
  2. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared log, or article. If it is exposed, YouTube’s live stream settings help explains how to reset a stream key in Live Control Room.
  3. Confirm the local encoder. The example below uses FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder. Check that your installed FFmpeg build provides it, and make sure the input contains the audio you intend to send.

Use an H.264 RTMPS command for a file

This replaceable template sends a local file to YouTube over RTMPS using H.264. Replace input.mp4 and the endpoint placeholder with your own values. The placeholder is not a working ingest URL or stream key.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
  -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
  -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

What to check in the command

  • -re reads a file at its native rate to simulate a live source. FFmpeg cautions against using a reduced read rate on an actual capture or live input because it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream; -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional. If audio is required but missing, add or select a valid audio source rather than assuming this command creates sound.
  • -b:v 50M sets the H.264 video target to YouTube’s 2160p60 recommendation. -maxrate and -bufsize configure rate-control limits and buffering for this illustrative template; encoder behavior varies, so monitor the actual output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
  • -r 60 requests a 60 fps output, while -g 120 and -keyint_min 120 set a 120-frame keyframe cadence, equivalent to two seconds at 60 fps. If your source cadence differs, adjust frame-rate conversion and keyframe settings to the intended output.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p is a conventional SDR pixel format. The template is not an HDR workflow.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer used here for RTMP(S). RTMPS is RTMP carried over an SSL connection; see the FFmpeg protocols documentation.

This command is illustrative, not a universal drop-in configuration or a claim that a particular computer has been tested. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes libx264, that the source and settings produce the intended 3840×2160, 60 fps output, and that the machine can encode it at real-time speed. The chosen flags do not guarantee a fixed network bitrate.

Adapt the setup for HEVC, AV1, or HDR

For a supported HEVC or AV1 encoder, use a 35 Mbps video target in line with YouTube’s 2160p60 recommendation. The encoder name and its rate-control options depend on the FFmpeg build and system. Check the encoders and options actually available in your installation rather than assuming a particular hardware encoder configuration. Also verify playback compatibility for your intended audience.

If HDR is required, YouTube recommends H.265 and does not support AV1 for HDR. Do not treat HDR as a one-flag change to the SDR example: pixel format, color metadata, encoder support, and ingest workflow must agree. YouTube documents HLS ingestion as a distinct option with separate packaging requirements; it is not a drop-in replacement for the example’s FLV/RTMPS output.

Validate the stream before you rely on it

  1. Check the outgoing format. Confirm the stream is 3840×2160 at 60 fps and uses the codec and keyframe cadence you intend. Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where possible and never above YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  2. Test representative content. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with motion and audio similar to the intended stream. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  3. Check upload capacity under realistic conditions. Measure the available upload bitrate and leave headroom beyond video alone for audio and transport overhead. Choose settings that remain stable rather than setting the connection’s entire capacity as the video target.
  4. Monitor Live Control Room stream health. YouTube’s documented diagnostics include low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and keyframe/GOP problems. Use those messages to identify the category of fault instead of guessing. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the event; see its LiveStreams API documentation.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
YouTube reports low bitrate or the stream buffers The upload connection cannot sustain the chosen total bitrate, or encoder rate control is not behaving as expected. Test upload capacity, leave headroom for audio and transport overhead, and verify the actual outgoing bitrate. Reduce the target if needed and test again.
Frame-rate mismatch or dropped frames The source cadence, requested output cadence, or real-time encoding capacity does not match the intended 60 fps output. Check the source and output frame rates, adjust conversion deliberately, and confirm the system can encode 4K60 at real-time speed.
YouTube flags keyframe or GOP issues The encoder’s actual keyframe cadence differs from the configured interval or exceeds YouTube’s limit. Verify the output cadence and keyframe interval. For 60 fps, 120 frames equals two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable The installed build may not include libx264 or the encoder selected for another codec. Use an FFmpeg build that includes the required encoder, or choose an encoder that is present and verify its options locally.
The stream connects but has no audio The input may have no audio stream, or the selected audio mapping does not match the file. Inspect the input streams and select a valid audio source. The optional mapping in the example permits a video-only input; it does not supply audio.
Authentication or connection fails The endpoint or key may be wrong, stale, or copied incorrectly. Copy the current ingest URL and key from Live Control Room. If a key was exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream settings.

When HLS is the better protocol fit

YouTube HLS ingestion is a separate option for encoders that need HLS, including some HDR workflows. It requires M2TS multiplexing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and supports up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends segments between one and four seconds, with a five-second maximum. Because it is segment-based, HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingestion. Follow the separate YouTube HLS ingestion guide; an RTMPS/FLV command does not implement HLS.

Protect your stream’s content rights

Before sending a recording live, make sure you have the rights needed for its video, music, and other material. A successful encoder connection does not establish that content is authorized for streaming or monetization. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and use this copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight reference.
