Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf YouTube Live Control Room stays on “checking,” first read the full stream status and any error messages, then determine whether your encoder is actually sending a healthy stream. YouTube’s published help pages explain stream-health errors and general troubleshooting, but do not document “checking” that never finishes as a specific error or promise a dedicated fix. Treat it as a symptom to investigate—not proof that your stream key, computer, or internet connection is at fault.
1. Read the status and check whether the stream is reaching YouTube
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and read the complete stream status and any accompanying error text. YouTube says the status can include specific errors and instructions, while health-indicator messages carry timestamps and distinguish critical from moderate errors. See YouTube’s stream metrics and status guidance and its live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Check the encoder at the same time: is it running, and does it indicate that it is connected or sending? Compare what the encoder reports with what Live Control Room reports. If there is a specific error, follow its instructions; if the only visible status is “checking,” continue with the checks below. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify how long a normal check should take.
2. Check the encoder’s output before changing settings
For a stream sent through encoder software, inspect its preview or local output. If you record a local archive, review it too. Look and listen for missing video or audio, freezes, unexpected black frames, or other faults that also appear in the encoder’s own output. Check the encoder dashboard for errors, confirm the software is current, and look at CPU load while streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Encoder shows an error starting: Follow YouTube’s relevant startup guidance. A new stream key is relevant when there is a separate key or startup problem; a status stuck on “checking,” by itself, is not a documented reason to reset it.
- Output has unexplained problems: YouTube suggests trying another encoder if the problem remains unexplained after the general checks. That is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix for the checking indicator.
- Output looks and sounds right: Test the outbound internet connection next rather than assuming the encoder is at fault.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder checks, software updates, connection testing, and stream-key steps for relevant errors.
3. Test the outbound connection
If the encoder’s output appears healthy, test the connection carrying the stream to YouTube. YouTube identifies the outbound internet connection as a possible source of live-stream problems. If the test points to a connection issue, contact your internet service provider and retest. A connection test helps investigate the stream path; it does not establish that a stuck status display has a particular cause.

4. Use viewer reports to narrow down where the problem is
Ask affected viewers what they saw and whether you can reproduce the same error. The pattern can help distinguish a local viewing issue from a problem affecting the stream more broadly:
- One viewer reports an error: It may be specific to that viewer’s device or internet connection.
- Several viewers on one shared connection report it: The shared network may be involved.
- Viewers on different connections report it: Check the encoder and the stream you are sending, as YouTube’s guidance identifies the encoder as a possible cause in this pattern.
These are clues, not proof. Compare viewer reports with your own view in Live Control Room and the encoder’s local output. The distinctions come from YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.

5. Verify the stream configuration against YouTube’s current guidance
Check the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate configured in the encoder; do not change them solely because the health check says “checking.” YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its encoder settings guidance lists recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Examples for 1080p are:
| Codec | 1080p at 30 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps recommended | 17 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps recommended | 12 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube-published recommended settings, not a diagnosis of the “checking” symptom. The same guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, names H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among encoder configuration details, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and constant bitrate encoding. Confirm the applicable values on YouTube’s settings page before changing a configuration, since guidance can change.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Avoid changes that do not match the evidence
A stuck “checking” status alone does not establish that the stream key is wrong, the encoder needs replacing, or additional hardware is needed. YouTube’s stream-key guidance concerns cases such as an encoder error when starting; its reviewed help pages do not present key resets, buying equipment, or any other single action as a fix for this exact display state.
Make a change only when a separate finding points to it—for example, an encoder startup error, a visible fault in local output, or a connection test that identifies a network problem. Change one relevant setting at a time and check the result in both the encoder and Live Control Room.

7. If it remains on “checking,” report the problem to YouTube
If the status remains stuck after the checks, report the continuing live-stream problem to YouTube. Include the exact status and error text, when it began, whether the encoder is sending, which encoder and network checks you completed, and whether the issue appears for viewers on different networks. YouTube’s general troubleshooting page says to report persistent live-stream problems, but the reviewed help pages do not specify a separate escalation route for a status stuck on “checking.”
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than troubleshoot a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts, and it does not diagnose or fix a Live Control Room status stuck on “checking.” Start the free day on StreamNeo.
