Researchers date it to about 560 million years ago. Its raised form exposes subtle ridges along its branches—details that are difficult to see in the flattened impressions more common in fossils of this age.
What did the Norwegian rocks reveal?
The standout fossil is Charnia, a frond-shaped organism from the Ediacaran Period. The University of Cambridge describes this as the first confirmed Charnia find in Scandinavia. The fossil assemblage also marks a new major Ediacaran locality in Europe, according to the researchers.
“Frond-shaped” describes its appearance; it does not mean the organism was a plant. Researchers characterize Charnia cautiously as an early animal-like organism. It was soft-bodied and reportedly had no mouth, organs, or visible means of movement. A comparison to a sedentary jellyfish can help convey its general way of life, but it was not a modern jellyfish, and its classification should not be treated as settled.
The age is approximate: about 560 million years, according to the University of Cambridge’s 2026 account. “Ediacaran” refers to the period in which the organism lived.

Why is three-dimensional preservation unusual?
Many Ediacaran organisms had no hard skeletons, making their remains difficult to preserve. Their fossils are often compressed into two-dimensional impressions. The Norwegian specimen retains relief and form in the rock, making it possible to see details that a flattened outline can conceal.
Researchers report subtle ridges running along the branches and call these features keels. They are hard to detect in flatter examples. The distinction is not simply that this fossil looks more lifelike: its preserved relief provides anatomical detail that may be unavailable in compressed impressions.

How might the fossil have been preserved?
The researchers propose that a dense underwater sediment flow swept over the organism and buried it quickly. Such flows can leave deposits known as turbidites; the University of Cambridge describes the proposed event as an ancient underwater avalanche. In this interpretation, sediment entered or filled the soft body and helped retain its shape as it was buried.
This is a geological explanation inferred from the sedimentary setting, not a directly observed event. The report does not establish a more detailed account of the burial process.

How was the fossil discovered?
Geologists were working near an outcrop in Finnmark where traces of Ediacaran organisms had previously been observed, including structures interpreted as evidence of organisms anchoring to an ancient seafloor. The organisms themselves had not previously been found at this location.
The fossils came to light by chance: blocks that had fallen from a cliff split open in a sheep field. Lead author Dr Yorick Veenma of the University of Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences said, “As scientists, we tend to go to the same well-known sites again and again to look for fossils like these.”

What does a new Norwegian locality add?
Ediacaran fossils are known from a relatively small number of places. The discovery adds a major European locality and suggests that these organisms may have occupied a broader geographic range than the best-known sites alone indicate. It does not, by itself, establish the full range of Charnia or other Ediacaran organisms.
Co-author Professor Neil Davies, also of Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences, noted that the Ediacaran fossil record is difficult to build because most organisms were soft-bodied and skeletons had not yet evolved, making preservation less likely.

Where was the finding published?
The study is titled “Charnia and other late Ediacaran macrofossils preserved in turbiditic deposits of the Indreelva Member (Finnmark, Norway).” It was published in Palaeontology in 2026, with DOI 10.1111/pala.70082. The available accounts do not provide a basis for adding precise specimen counts, detailed dating methods, or further taxonomic conclusions.
