Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A good speed-test result does not prove your YouTube stream has a stable connection to its ingest server, nor does it show whether OBS can keep up with the work of rendering and encoding. First identify which OBS counter is rising: network-dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag. Each points to a different fix.
First, identify which frames OBS says you are losing
In OBS, open View > Docks > Stats and watch the counters during the stream or a representative test. OBS uses “dropped frames” for an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate; rendering lag and encoding lag are separate local-performance issues. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide and OBS encoding performance guide.
- Frames dropped due to network: OBS cannot reliably send the configured bitrate to YouTube. Investigate bitrate and connection stability.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not rendering scenes quickly enough. Reduce the workload on the GPU or simplify the scene.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder cannot encode quickly enough. Reduce encoding workload, output resolution, or frame rate.
Do not treat all three counters as the same fault. A bitrate change is aimed at network drops; it will not, by itself, solve a machine that cannot render or encode the scene in time.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings for your exact stream
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations apply to sending a live feed to YouTube, not to encoding a video for upload. Its current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and a keyframe interval recommended at two seconds and no longer than four. Advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the latest values; the page does not state a publication year.

H.264 bitrate recommendations from YouTube
The values below are YouTube recommendations, not measured thresholds or guarantees that a connection will be free of drops. Choose the row matching both resolution and frame rate; other codecs have separate recommendations on YouTube’s page.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
In OBS, check the output resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval together. Matching a YouTube recommendation is a sensible starting point, but your stable upload capacity—not just a brief speed-test peak—must be sufficient to sustain the chosen bitrate.

If the network-dropped counter is rising
- Compare bitrate with your format. Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate in OBS, then compare the bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that exact combination. If it is above the recommendation, reduce it.
- Lower bitrate and test stability. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic when troubleshooting network drops. That is not a universal guarantee: upload speed can vary, and a speed test does not necessarily reflect the route or sustained capacity to YouTube’s ingest server. Reduce bitrate further if drops continue.
- Prefer wired networking if Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming over unstable Wi-Fi. A cable is only a relevant fix when the evidence points to Wi-Fi instability; it cannot correct a local rendering or encoding bottleneck.
- Check the connection path. OBS advises investigating VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, drivers, and network hardware when connection problems persist. Change one factor at a time and repeat the same test so you can tell what helped.
OBS’s connection guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that “isn’t stable” or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate. A healthy speed-test score alone does not rule either condition out.
If rendering or encoding lag is rising
- Lower output resolution or frame rate: this reduces the work needed to render and encode each second of video. The trade-off is lower image detail or motion smoothness.
- Cap a game’s frame rate: leaving the GPU resources for OBS can help when a game is consuming the capacity needed to render the stream.
- Simplify demanding scenes and sources: remove or reduce resource-intensive elements, then check whether the relevant OBS counter improves.
These are workload changes, not network fixes. OBS’s encoding performance guide, published June 12, 2021, covers local rendering and encoding performance. If the network counter stays flat while a lag counter rises, begin with these local adjustments rather than repeatedly changing upload bitrate.

Test with YouTube and OBS open together
- Recreate the real workload. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream, not just a static screen. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with comparable audio and movement in its encoder guidance.
- Watch OBS Stats. Note which counter rises and when. Test the same scenes and settings after each adjustment.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Monitor stream health and read its status messages alongside OBS’s counters. YouTube’s stream health guidance explains how to use these messages during a stream.
- Change one variable at a time. For network drops, try bitrate or connection-path changes. For local lag, try output, frame-rate, or scene-workload changes. Repeating a comparable test makes the result interpretable.
What latency does—and does not—tell you
Stream latency is the delay between capturing video and viewers playing it. YouTube warns that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Latency is not identified in YouTube’s guidance as a fix for OBS network-dropped frames, so do not change latency settings expecting them to repair an unstable ingest connection. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance.
