If YouTube Live says your bitrate is too low, match your encoder’s bitrate to the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec using YouTube’s live ingest recommendations. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, or 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. Then check that your actual upload bandwidth can carry the entire stream bitrate with about 20% headroom.
Fix the bitrate warning in this order
- Check the stream YouTube is receiving. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, note the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube detects these automatically by default; a custom stream key allows manual resolution settings.
- Identify your encoder’s video codec. Choose the matching H.264 or AV1/H.265 column in the live bitrate table below. Do not use a value from a different codec, resolution, or frame rate.
- Set the encoder to the recommended bitrate. YouTube’s minimum is not the target for a reliable, recommended configuration. Set constant bitrate (CBR), then use the recommended value for your row.
- Check the rest of the encoder settings. Confirm a supported video codec, a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds), and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. Check audio settings as well.
- Verify upload capacity under real conditions. Test upload speed—not just download speed—and compare the capacity available to the stream against its total bitrate. Allow roughly 20% headroom and account for other devices or people using the connection.
- Test before going live. Use audio and motion similar to the real stream. Watch the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and timestamped warnings. If the connection cannot support the selected setting, lower the resolution and choose the bitrate for that new resolution.
YouTube’s error guidance says to consider lowering the selected resolution if bandwidth cannot support it. A higher bitrate is not a fix if the connection cannot sustain it.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations by resolution and codec
The following are YouTube’s live ingest figures, checked October 3, 2026. Each cell gives the minimum followed by the recommended bitrate, in Mbps. Match all three properties—resolution, frame rate, and codec—to the encoder you are actually using.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 Minimum / recommended |
H.264 Minimum / recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 / 35 Mbps | 14 / 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 / 30 Mbps | 11 / 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 / 24 Mbps | 8 / 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 / 15 Mbps | 7 / 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 / 12 Mbps | 6 / 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 / 10 Mbps | 5 / 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
For instance, the recommended setting for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps with H.264 but 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. At 1080p30, the corresponding recommendations are 14 Mbps and 10 Mbps. These are encoder settings for a live stream sent to YouTube, not settings for an uploaded video file. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the official table.

Confirm the encoder settings that affect stream health
Bitrate mode and video encoding
YouTube’s live guidance recommends CBR (constant bitrate). Check that the encoder is using a supported live video codec—H.264, H.265, or AV1—and that its bitrate is set to the recommended value for the selected resolution and frame rate. A bitrate that is suitable for H.264 may not be the right value for AV1 or H.265.
Keyframes and frame rate
Set keyframe frequency to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. Encoder interfaces may ask for a time interval or a number of frames. At 30 fps, a two-second interval equals 60 frames; at 60 fps, it equals 120 frames. YouTube lists a maximum frame rate of 60 fps.

Audio and color
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio codecs and recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps. For SDR, its live guidance lists Rec. 709. If the bitrate appears correct but the warning persists, check YouTube’s error details for audio codec or sample-rate problems, as well as the video configuration.
Ingest protocol and resolution selection
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS for live ingest. Its default resolution detection may differ from a manually selected resolution when you use a custom stream key. Check the resolution YouTube reports rather than assuming it matches the encoder’s intended output.

Distinguish an encoder mismatch from a network limit
A warning can point to different problems: the encoder may be sending a bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation, or the upload connection may not reliably sustain the bitrate you selected. Check both sides instead of raising the number blindly.
- If the encoder value is below the table’s recommendation: set it to the recommended value if your upload connection can support it.
- If the encoder is already set correctly but stream health is unstable: test upload capacity and consider shared network usage, not just the speed shown for downloads.
- If available upload bandwidth is insufficient: lower the resolution, then set the bitrate recommended for that resolution and codec.
- If the warning continues despite sufficient upload capacity and a matching bitrate: review codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and timestamped Live Control Room messages.
YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving room—20% is its recommendation. This headroom is a margin, not extra bitrate to enter into the encoder. A speed test is a snapshot; other network users or devices can reduce the capacity available to the stream. For YouTube’s network guidance, see Streaming tips.

Why upload bitrate advice does not apply to a live warning
Live ingest and uploaded videos use separate recommendations. YouTube’s upload guidance describes MP4 and H.264 recommendations, variable bitrate, and no required bitrate limit. Its reference recommendations for SDR uploads include 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps for 1080p at high frame rates. Those upload figures are not the live encoder targets in the table above. For uploads, consult YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings.
Troubleshoot persistent warnings
- The bitrate is below YouTube’s recommended value: verify resolution, frame rate, and codec, then set the matching recommended live bitrate.
- The encoder says it is sending the right bitrate, but YouTube reports it as low: check the resolution and frame rate received in Live Control Room and confirm the encoder codec. A mismatch can make the selected table row wrong.
- The stream drops frames or health degrades: compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity, including other network use. Reduce resolution if the connection cannot sustain the setting.
- The keyframe warning remains: set a two-second keyframe interval (at 30 fps, 60 frames) and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
- The bitrate and network appear adequate, but warnings persist: read the timestamped messages and check video codec or profile, audio codec and sample rate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. YouTube’s live streaming error messages guide identifies these configuration areas.
- You are checking speed on Wi-Fi: run a fresh upload test during conditions similar to the stream and consider whether a wired connection would make the network link more reliable. A cable cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by an insufficient internet plan, nor correct an encoder setting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to running an encoder on a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot for any quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not a camera-based live feed. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free first day.
