If OBS shows rising network dropped frames, the stream cannot reliably deliver its encoded video to the platform’s ingest server at the bitrate you set. First confirm which OBS counter is rising; then test the route, reduce bitrate enough to leave upload headroom, and remove local network variables. Rendering lag and encoder overload are different problems and need different fixes.
These steps apply worldwide, including to creators in India. There is no single India-wide connection fault to assume: your ISP route, Wi-Fi, other upload traffic and chosen ingest server all need to be checked from your own location.
Confirm which OBS counter is increasing
Open OBS’s status bar or the Statistics window while the problem is happening. “Dropped frames” in the network sense means frames OBS cannot deliver to the remote server. OBS Project describes it as an unstable connection to the server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate, and says it is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
- Network dropped frames: The connection to the platform’s ingest server, or the bitrate relative to available upload, is the primary suspect.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose the scene, often because GPU resources are occupied by scenes or sources.
- Encoding overload: The encoder cannot keep up with the configured output settings.
A choppy viewer playback experience does not by itself prove OBS is dropping frames. OBS notes that viewer buffering can occur even when broadcaster-side network dropped frames are not rising. Check the platform’s stream-health information as well as OBS counters.

Save a log and establish a baseline
Capture evidence during a representative test with the same scene, audio, resolution, frame rate and approximate bitrate you intend to use. In OBS, use Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File after the test, or upload the previous log if the issue has stopped. Keep the resulting log link, the time of the test, the selected server, and whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The OBS Help Portal’s “OBS is dropping frames. How can I fix this?” guidance also points streamers to logs and connection checks (OBS Help Portal).
Change one variable at a time and compare matched test periods. A speed-test upload result is only a snapshot under that test’s conditions; it does not demonstrate stable throughput to your particular live ingest route throughout a long stream.
Test the ingest route, then lower bitrate carefully
Try another ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and, if the service presents server choices, select a different ingest server for a controlled test. Compare network-dropped-frame behavior over similar periods with the same bitrate and scene. A different server may use a different network route, so “nearest” or lower ping alone is not proof that it will sustain the stream better. OBS recommends trying another server as part of connection troubleshooting (OBS Project).

Choose a sustainable bitrate with headroom
In OBS, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and adjust the streaming bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 guidance gives 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point, while YouTube recommends leaving 20% room between total stream bitrate and available upload. These are starting guidance figures, not guarantees; use the more conservative outcome if the connection is shared or variable (OBS; YouTube network guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor YouTube, its currently published recommended H.264 examples are below. These values are not universal prescriptions: YouTube publishes different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so match the table to the actual codec, resolution and frame rate (YouTube live encoder settings).
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
For YouTube H.264, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Lowering bitrate may mean choosing a lower resolution or frame rate to preserve a clean image. For a mostly static meditation scene, compare the actual result rather than assuming the highest setting is necessary.

Account for simultaneous uploads by family members, cloud backups, camera feeds or other devices. If reducing bitrate stops network drops, leave the stable setting in place rather than raising it back to the edge of measured capacity.
Remove Wi-Fi and local-network variables
Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi
If OBS is on Wi-Fi, connect the computer to the router by Ethernet and repeat the same test. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi instability is suspected. A generic Cat 6 cable is one practical way to make that comparison; it cannot solve ISP congestion, an ingest-route issue or encoder overload.

VPNs, security products, network-priority software and “optimizer” utilities can affect routing or traffic handling. Temporarily test whether a VPN or security product is involved only in a controlled way; restore normal security protections promptly. If the evidence points to a security product blocking OBS, create an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled. OBS also documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate as a congestion mitigation that lowers video quality rather than fixing the underlying connection issue.

Inspect equipment and drivers
Check that network drivers are current and inspect the router, modem, Ethernet cable, network adapter, switch or extender if the test points to local equipment. Restarting the modem and router can be a reasonable diagnostic step. Avoid changing several hardware or network settings at once, or you will lose the ability to identify which change mattered.
If forcing IPv4 does not help, return the IP-family setting to its default rather than keeping an unsupported workaround. OBS’s connection guide covers these network checks and recommends involving the ISP if the problem persists (OBS Project).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If network drops are not rising, troubleshoot performance instead
When network-dropped frames remain flat but rendering lag or encoder overload increases, reducing bitrate alone may not solve the cause. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes and sources, and avoiding unnecessarily large sources when the output is smaller (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

- Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps if the visuals do not need 60 fps.
- Reduce output resolution if the computer cannot render or encode the chosen format consistently.
- Remove browser sources, filters or animated elements that are not needed for the meditation stream.
- Do not buy a GPU or other hardware before logs and repeatable tests show a host-performance bottleneck.
Prepare a 24/7 stream for real operating conditions
Before leaving a stream running, test the actual audio, moving visuals, resolution, frame rate and approximate bitrate for a meaningful period. Watch OBS counters and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status after launch; YouTube provides real-time stream information and recommends testing event preparation and backup-encoder failover. Those event recommendations do not constitute a complete OBS-specific 24/7 recovery design (YouTube encoder guidance; YouTube stream-health metrics).
For a non-interactive meditation stream, the lowest-latency mode is usually not the priority. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering; choose a stable latency mode based on whether live interaction matters to your audience (YouTube live settings).
Use only music, recordings and visuals you have the rights to stream. A technically healthy broadcast can still face copyright claims or other YouTube policy consequences if its content is not authorized. For YouTube’s own guidance, review its live streaming requirements and encoder information before committing to a continuous broadcast.
When to contact your ISP
If changing ingest servers, using Ethernet, reducing bitrate and checking local equipment do not resolve the drops, ask your ISP to investigate intermittent upload instability, congestion or routing. Send the support team the timestamps, OBS log, selected ingest server, bitrate, wired-versus-Wi-Fi results and whether another server or platform behaved differently. Do not assume the cause is a nationwide Indian broadband issue; the useful evidence is specific to your location and route.
