YouTube does not set one internet-plan speed that guarantees a stable live stream. Its recommended encoder bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec; your measured upload capacity must be higher than the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, and real-world stability also depends on network use and interruptions.
Recommended YouTube live bitrates by resolution
The figures below are YouTube Help’s encoder ingestion settings, not the upload speed your internet plan must provide. Use the column for the codec you intend to stream with. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as encoder choices; its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide is the primary reference, and its current values may change.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For default 16:9 video, YouTube’s listed dimensions are 1280×720 for 720p, 1920×1080 for 1080p, 2560×1440 for 1440p and 3840×2160 for 2160p. The player can adapt to other aspect ratios. See YouTube’s resolution guidance.
How much upload speed do you need for 1080p?
For H.264, YouTube recommends an encoder bitrate of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. Those are stream bitrate settings, not guaranteed internet-plan requirements.

YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Applying that headroom arithmetically, an H.264 1080p60 stream set to 17 Mbps calls for about 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is a practical calculation from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate YouTube threshold or a guarantee of stability. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.
Turn an encoder bitrate into an upload target
- Choose the stream settings. Select resolution, frame rate and codec, then use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination as your starting point.
- Allow at least 20% headroom. Multiply the total stream bitrate by 1.2 as a simple planning calculation. For multiple streams or other simultaneous uploads, account for their combined bitrate too.
- Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test and check the outbound/upload result, not the download speed or the headline speed of the internet plan. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth.
- Check conditions during the test. Other people and devices using the connection, other uploads, and connectivity disruptions can reduce capacity or stability. A single speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection will remain steady.
Configure and test before going live
Use compatible encoder settings
For RTMP or RTMPS streaming, YouTube lists CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. For HDR, its guide recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the described settings. Check the current encoder guide for supported settings.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream key.
- In your encoder, choose the corresponding resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, then enter the stream key in the stream settings. Keep the key private.
- Before the event, run a test using audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. Confirm that the encoder can sustain the selected settings and check YouTube’s stream health and any warnings.
- During the broadcast, keep watching the stream health indicators and messages. If the connection falters, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that your measured upload capacity can support.
A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful way to avoid some wireless variability if your equipment supports it, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service. YouTube’s cited guidance calls for a reliable network; it does not specify a cable category as a bitrate requirement.
Troubleshoot upload speed and stream instability
- Encoder reports dropped frames or YouTube warns about connection quality: Compare the selected total bitrate with measured upload capacity, including other streams and uploads. Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Speed test looks adequate but the stream still fluctuates: The connection may vary over time or be shared. Pause other uploads, limit competing network use, test again under representative conditions, and monitor stream health.
- Download speed is high but upload is low: Use the upload result for planning. Download performance does not show how much outbound capacity is available to send the live stream.
- Settings exceed what the encoder or network can sustain: Select a lower resolution or frame rate and use the matching recommended bitrate from YouTube’s table. Test before the event rather than relying on a brief connection check.
- Stream key does not connect the encoder: Verify that the key entered in the encoder matches the stream created in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm the encoder is configured for the selected streaming protocol.
