YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the encoder asks for frames instead of seconds, use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. If the warning persists, check the stream actually being sent and the message in YouTube Live Control Room; changing the visible setting alone may not correct the outgoing GOP.
What the keyframe warning means
“YouTube live stream keyframe interval not supported” is a useful description of the problem, but YouTube’s retrieved help pages do not use that exact wording. YouTube documents an encoder error for incorrect keyframe frequency and instructs creators to send keyframes every 2 seconds. A mismatch between the configured interval and the stream YouTube receives is a likely explanation for this warning.
A keyframe is a complete reference frame in the video stream. The keyframe interval, also called keyframe frequency, describes how often one is sent. GOP refers to the group of pictures between keyframes. YouTube notes that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering and that ingestion errors can result in an incorrect GOP size.
Set the interval to 2 seconds
- Open your encoder’s video or advanced output settings. Look for a control labelled keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP size. The name and location differ between encoders.
- Enter 2 seconds. If the control takes a frame count, multiply the frame rate by two. At 30 fps, enter 60 frames; at 60 fps, enter 120 frames. If you change the frame rate, adjust the frame count accordingly.
- Choose a closed GOP if your encoder offers that option. YouTube says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding. Not every encoder exposes a switch with that exact label.
- Apply the changes and test before your scheduled stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video motion similar to the planned broadcast.
- Check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the warning has cleared before relying on the setup for an event.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds”. If the warning continues
- Confirm the units. A value entered as frames is not the same as seconds. For example, 2 frames is not a 2-second interval.
- Check the encoder’s actual output. A setting displayed in the interface does not by itself prove that the outgoing stream uses that cadence. Verify the emitted keyframe interval and GOP behavior using a method appropriate to your encoder.
- Review the current Live Control Room message. YouTube’s error guidance says ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes, so investigate the stream being received as well as the encoder setting.
- Retest after each change. Monitor stream health and messages with the same frame rate and similar audio and motion to the planned stream.
YouTube’s help documentation does not prescribe one universal way to inspect emitted GOP behavior across all encoders. If you cannot verify it in your software, consult that encoder’s documentation or support. A different camera, capture card, cable, or general hardware upgrade is not an evidence-backed fix for an interval or GOP configuration error.
