To lower CPU use on a 24/7 kids’ cartoon stream, first check whether OBS is encoding with x264 or a supported hardware encoder. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate only as needed, simplify scenes and sources, and test the result with representative video and audio. Change one thing at a time: there is no universal CPU threshold or proven percentage saving for cartoon streams.
Find out what is using the CPU
In OBS, check the selected encoder and monitor system load while the stream is running. x264 encodes on the CPU; a supported hardware encoder moves the encoding work to a specialized component, usually in the GPU. That can reduce CPU demand, but it does not eliminate the work of rendering scenes, processing sources, or running other applications.
Record a baseline before changing settings: note the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether OBS reports encoding or rendering problems. Make one adjustment, then compare under similar conditions. The actual result depends on your hardware, source files, scene, and output settings.
Switch from x264 to hardware encoding if your system supports it
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it takes encoding work off the CPU. Available options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware, operating-system, and OBS compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- NVIDIA NVENC: OBS documentation says support is available on Windows and Linux with a GeForce 750 Ti, 900-series (Maxwell), or newer card. OBS recommends Turing-generation NVENC for best results and cautions that earlier generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate.
- Intel QSV: Requires supported Intel graphics hardware.
- Apple VideoToolbox: OBS supports streaming with VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon. Its documentation says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate limitations.
Compatibility depends on the exact hardware and software configuration. Check the OBS hardware-encoding documentation before changing encoders or buying a graphics card. An upgrade is worth considering only if your current system lacks a suitable encoder and other adjustments are not enough; a new GPU is not a universal first step.
Reduce resolution or frame rate gradually
Lower output resolution or frame rate if the system is overloaded. Fewer pixels and frames reduce work for both encoding and rendering. For cartoons, try 30 fps if 60 fps is causing trouble and the less fluid motion remains acceptable. If necessary, reduce output resolution as well, judging image detail and motion after each change.

Changing the base canvas is more disruptive because it can require repositioning sources. OBS reserves that step for systems starved for GPU resources. Start with output settings rather than rebuilding the canvas.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings to the output
For YouTube Live, the recommended H.264 bitrates below vary by resolution and frame rate. These are ingest recommendations, not promises about CPU use. YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS. Its live settings page says streams are transcoded into multiple output formats.

Use the settings for your actual codec and output rather than applying one bitrate to every configuration. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the relevant destination requirements, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing.
Simplify OBS scenes and sources
Scene composition can consume resources even after encoding has been moved to a hardware encoder. Keep scenes as lean as the broadcast allows:

- Remove sources and filters that are not needed. OBS notes that hidden sources may still use resources.
- Use media assets at a sensible resolution; avoid feeding a very high-resolution video into a much smaller output when a lower-resolution version will do.
- Reduce the size or number of Browser Sources where possible. For static graphics, use an image source instead of a browser overlay when practical.
- Disable expensive filters that do not contribute meaningfully to the stream, and apply effects to the smallest appropriate source.
Change one source or effect at a time so you can tell whether it affected CPU use, GPU load, or the picture.

The reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance does not prescribe a test duration or promise a particular uptime. Use a long enough test to expose problems that a short preview would miss, and do not assume a change is safe for continuous operation just because one brief segment plays smoothly.
Troubleshoot common CPU and stream problems
- CPU remains high after switching encoders: Scene rendering, filters, sources, or other applications may still be demanding resources. Simplify the scene and check system load again.
- OBS shows encoding overload: Try a supported hardware encoder, lower output frame rate or resolution, or—for x264—use a faster preset while checking the image quality. Faster x264 presets generally use less CPU but can reduce quality.
- The stream looks less smooth after reducing frame rate: Compare motion in representative cartoon scenes. Restore the prior setting if the trade-off is unacceptable, then try reducing resolution or simplifying sources instead.
- Image quality falls after changing encoders: Hardware encoder generations can differ in quality at the same bitrate. Check the exact encoder generation and YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance before deciding whether the trade-off works for your channel.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: Check codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and RTMPS against YouTube’s current settings guidance, then test again with representative audio and motion.
- CPU or stream behavior varies from one test to another: Compare runs with the same scenes, output settings, and source material. Without a controlled comparison, you cannot attribute a change to one adjustment with confidence.
Choose between local encoding and cloud playback
Local OBS gives you direct control over scenes and encoding, but the computer must keep running and the stream depends on that machine and its connection. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU impact; encoder generation, bitrate, and scene workload still affect the result. OBS notes that earlier hardware-encoder generations can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s veryfast preset.
For prerecorded cartoons that need to run continuously, cloud playback is another approach: the video is played from a service rather than encoded and sent by a computer at home. YouTube Help lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video and says it can run without a dedicated PC. That listing alone does not establish a service’s current price, reliability, or terms, so check those directly before choosing one.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded content going to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
