A YouTube radio stream can keep playing through a power outage only if both the playback equipment and its internet connection remain available. Put the modem or fiber terminal, router, and listening device on suitable backup power; if the internet connection itself goes down, switch to cellular data if it works or to audio saved locally in advance. A UPS cannot keep an internet provider’s entire network online.
What has to stay powered for YouTube radio to play?
A home listening setup can depend on several separate devices: the modem or optical network terminal (ONT), the router, the phone or computer playing YouTube, and speakers. If any required link loses power, playback may stop. Fiber and cable systems may require equipment inside the subscriber’s premises to have local power during an outage, as the FCC explains in order FCC 15-98.
Power is only one part of the chain. A UPS can keep compatible home equipment running, but it cannot guarantee that the ISP’s upstream network remains operational. The FCC notes that many subscribers rely on a battery backup or UPS during outages; that local backup does not control the provider’s facilities.
Prepare before the power goes out
- Identify every device the stream needs. Check whether your connection uses a modem, router, ONT, or a combination, and include the playback device and speakers if they need mains power.
- Check your backup unit’s capacity and outlets. Confirm which sockets provide battery backup and whether they accept the plugs for your networking and playback equipment. Check the devices’ power requirements against the backup unit’s specifications.
- Test the whole setup. While mains power is available, run the intended equipment from the UPS or other backup source and confirm that the network and stream continue working. Runtime depends on the connected load and the backup product; there is no reliable generic runtime figure.
- Charge portable devices. Charge your phone, power bank, and rechargeable speaker before severe weather or a planned interruption. Ready.gov recommends keeping electronics charged and planning alternative ways to recharge them in its power outage hazard information sheet.
- Prepare an offline fallback. Save audio you are permitted to download, where the service and content allow it, or keep other locally accessible audio ready. This is a fallback for lost connectivity, not a way to keep a live YouTube broadcast playing offline.
What to do when the outage starts
- Keep essential networking and playback equipment on backup power. Use battery-backed outlets for the modem or ONT and router, then power the device needed to listen if capacity allows.
- Reduce avoidable device use. On a phone, use screen-off audio playback where supported and reduce brightness or unnecessary activity. The amount of power saved varies by device and settings.
- Check whether the internet still works. If home broadband fails, try cellular data or another independent connection only if it is available and functioning. A phone power bank can extend a compatible phone’s operation, but it does not power the home router or provide internet service by itself.
- Switch to local audio if there is no connection. Use eligible downloaded content or audio stored on a device. YouTube downloads are subject to content availability and service eligibility, and they do not preserve a live stream once connectivity is lost.
Will Wi-Fi work during a power outage?
It may, if the modem or ONT and router have power and the ISP’s network is still operating. A UPS addresses only the equipment connected to it at your premises. Even with powered home equipment, an upstream outage can make internet services unavailable.

For a phone-based fallback, a power bank can keep the phone operating longer, but cellular data is useful only where coverage and service remain available. If neither home broadband nor cellular connectivity works, locally available audio is the practical option.
Can I listen to YouTube offline?
Only in the cases YouTube supports. YouTube says background playback in its mobile apps requires an eligible membership, and some videos are unavailable for background play or offline download. Check the current background playback help page and Premium benefits information for applicable features and restrictions. An offline download is advance preparation for eligible content; it does not keep a live YouTube broadcast running after the internet disappears.

Plan for a longer outage safely
Prioritize essential loads and plan how you will recharge backup devices rather than assuming a battery will last a particular number of hours. For a generator, follow its product instructions and safe-placement guidance. Ready.gov says generators should be operated outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings such as windows, doors, or garages. Safety takes priority over keeping entertainment equipment running.
Troubleshooting: why the stream stopped
- The router has power, but there is no internet: The modem or ONT may also need backup power, or the ISP’s network may be unavailable. Check the required premises equipment and use cellular service only if it is working.
- The internet works, but the stream stopped: Check that the phone, computer, or speaker has power and that playback has not paused or been interrupted. Reconnect to the available network and restart playback if needed.
- The phone is running low: Connect a compatible power bank, turn off unnecessary screen use, and save power for listening and communication.
- Downloaded audio is unavailable: The video may not be eligible for offline playback, or the feature may require an eligible membership. Choose locally stored audio that you are permitted to use.
- The backup battery ran out: Reduce the connected load where possible and use your planned recharge option. Actual runtime depends on both the equipment load and backup unit.
