You can keep a YouTube gaming stream running from a VPS, but only if the server can access the gameplay video and a supervised encoder can send it to YouTube. A VPS is not a game source by itself. Decide first whether it will encode gameplay or relay an already encoded feed; then configure YouTube’s current ingest details, use a supported video profile, and test the full path before relying on it continuously.
Choose how the gameplay reaches the VPS
A continuous stream has three parts: a gameplay source, an encoder or relay, and an internet connection to YouTube Live. The VPS handles only the parts you arrange for it to handle. It does not automatically capture a console or receive video from your gaming PC.
- Game rendered on the VPS: The server must run the game and produce the video. Whether a particular VPS can do this depends on its hardware, software support, and workload; YouTube does not specify a universal VPS configuration.
- Game rendered on a local PC: The local machine can send its video to an encoder or relay on the VPS. This adds a connection between the home source and server, and the source machine still needs to remain available.
- Console or separate computer: A capture card may be part of the path when the video must be captured from external hardware. It is not required when the gameplay feed is already available to the server-side encoding process.
Choose whether the VPS will encode or relay. Encoding means processing video into the outgoing stream format, so workload depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder. A relay forwards an already encoded feed and has a different compute demand. This distinction is practical deployment guidance, not a YouTube server-sizing rule.
Plan the VPS around the actual workload
There is no universal CPU, GPU, memory, or bandwidth specification for this use case in YouTube’s cited guidance. Select a server only after deciding where the game runs, whether the VPS encodes or relays, and the output resolution and frame rate. Test the intended workload and check the hosting provider’s current sustained outbound transfer allowance, egress charges, and sustained-use terms directly.

Continuous video requires a steady outbound connection. A plan’s advertised connection speed alone does not establish whether its transfer limits or policies suit an always-on stream. No particular provider or plan can be recommended from the available verified details.
Configure YouTube Live and the outgoing stream
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the server URL and stream key shown there. Do not rely on a copied endpoint that may be stale, and keep the key private.
- Choose RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Its documented connection uses port 443; the server address and application path must match the current YouTube ingest details. RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL connection, as described in YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Set a supported encoder profile. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Choose bitrate for the exact output target. Use the bitrate range in YouTube’s table for your chosen resolution and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that is right for every gaming stream; the encoder guidance provides resolution- and frame-rate-specific values.
- Check YouTube’s live preview and status. Confirm that the source is arriving and the picture and sound are usable before leaving the stream unattended. YouTube transcodes live input into different viewing formats, but that does not remove the need to send a valid source stream.
Pick an ingest protocol with latency in mind
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. For ordinary live streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS. HLS is segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC-based ingestion, so it is not automatically the better choice for a continuous stream. Make the process recoverable and protect the channel
A continuous stream needs more than a successful first connection. Arrange for the encoder or relay process to be supervised and restarted after failure, and set up monitoring or alerts appropriate to your deployment. Check the source, encoder health, outbound connection, and YouTube’s live status when diagnosing an interruption. These are operational recommendations, not a YouTube guarantee or a prescribed VPS deployment recipe.
- Restrict access to the VPS and store the stream key somewhere that is not exposed in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
- Test a disconnect and restart before depending on the setup; confirm what happens to the source, encoder, and YouTube stream.
- Review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for the game footage, music, and other material in the stream. Technical uptime does not establish permission to broadcast content or eligibility for monetization.
