Short answer: Twitch’s official rerun workflow does not document a way to bring the original stream’s timestamped chat replay into a new rerun broadcast. Keep the original VOD available and direct viewers to it for the original chat; label the new broadcast as a rerun and do not promise that it will show the old chat. On YouTube, check that Live Chat Replay remains enabled on the archived stream, and avoid editing the archive in YouTube’s video editor if chat replay matters.
First, distinguish the original replay from a rerun
An archived stream and a new broadcast of prerecorded footage are different viewing experiences. The original archive may retain its timestamped chat replay. A Twitch rerun is a new broadcast of prerecorded content; viewers may participate in its live chat, but Twitch’s official rerun instructions do not document importing the original archive’s chat into that broadcast. That transfer is not guaranteed by the documented workflow.
If viewers want to read what people said during the original gameplay, preserve the original archive and link them to it. Describe the new broadcast as a rerun rather than implying it reproduces the original chat.
Keep the original Twitch VOD and its chat replay available
Enable VOD storage before you stream
- Before the original broadcast, open Twitch’s Stream Settings.
- Enable Store Past Broadcasts. Twitch says VOD storage is not enabled by default, so a broadcast that was not saved cannot be assumed to have an original archive to revisit.
Save important VODs before they expire
Twitch’s current VOD help page gives these retention periods: 60 days for Partners and Prime or Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. Download or export an important VOD from Video Producer before the applicable period ends. Saving a file preserves the footage, but does not by itself restore a chat replay to a newly broadcast rerun.

Label the new broadcast accurately
- Capture and stream the VOD using an encoder of your choice, following Twitch’s rerun workflow.
- Select the Rerun checkbox, add [Rerun] at the start of the title, and include the rerun label in the go-live notification.
- In the title, description, or a pinned message, point viewers to the original VOD if they want its chat replay. Do not claim the old timestamped chat will appear alongside the rerun unless your separate production method has been verified.
Twitch describes reruns as “non-live content that you can play on your channel.” The label tells viewers what the broadcast is; it is not a documented control for restoring the first VOD’s chat.
Keep chat replay on a YouTube gaming stream archive
- Open the archived livestream in YouTube Studio and check Customization for the Live Chat Replay option.
- Leave Live Chat Replay enabled if you want viewers to see the archive’s chat. YouTube says it is on by default for livestream archives, but it can be unchecked for an individual archive.
- Avoid editing the livestream in YouTube’s video editor if preserving chat replay is essential. YouTube states: “Live streams that are edited in the video editor will not have chat replay.”
- Direct viewers to the YouTube watch page when chat matters. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not in embedded players.
Know what Twitch Stream Rewind does—and does not do
Stream Rewind lets eligible viewers pause and seek backward during a live Twitch stream. Their chat continues live while they are behind in playback, so it is not a replay of the original chat during a later rerun.

Twitch says only Affiliates and Partners can enable Stream Rewind; the streamer must also have Store Past Broadcasts and Always Publish VODs enabled. Viewer access is limited to qualifying channel subscribers or Turbo users. Check Twitch’s current eligibility details before relying on the feature.
Where chat replay is available

Troubleshoot missing chat replay
- The Twitch broadcast has no original VOD: Check whether Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream. Twitch says it is off by default; if the broadcast was not saved, the original archive cannot be assumed to exist.
- The Twitch VOD is no longer available: Check the applicable retention period and Video Producer. Download or export important VODs before expiration; a local copy does not recreate native chat replay on a new rerun.
- The Twitch rerun shows live chat, not the original chat: That is a distinct broadcast experience. Link viewers to the original archive for its chat; the documented rerun steps do not promise chat transfer.
- YouTube archive has no chat replay: In Studio, check the archive’s Live Chat Replay option under Customization. If the livestream was edited in YouTube’s video editor, YouTube says chat replay will not be available for that edited stream.
- Chat is missing in an embedded player: Open the platform’s watch page instead. YouTube says live chat is unavailable in embedded players, and Twitch’s embed documentation says chat replay is unsupported there.
