The PC must remain on and connected while it streams, and whether it can handle the job depends on its hardware, encoder settings, and upload connection.
What you need before setting up
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s current guidance accessed October 3, 2026.
- A spare PC that can run OBS Studio and stay powered on and online for the length of the broadcast.
- OBS Studio, which YouTube lists as open-source software available at no charge.
- Audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and a suitable visual such as a station image. A radio-style stream still needs to send video.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
OBS’s system-requirements page cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoding load varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so a successful test on your actual PC is more useful than assuming an older computer can handle a preset.
Set up the spare PC and OBS
1. Enable live streaming on the channel
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable live streaming if it is not already available. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Do not leave this until the moment you plan to start.
2. Install OBS and choose a starting configuration
Install OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its result as a starting point, not proof that the PC will sustain a long broadcast. YouTube recommends selecting an encoder quality that is reliable on your connection and checking upload capacity with a speed test.

3. Create a scene with both picture and sound
- In OBS, create a scene for the radio stream.
- Add a visual source, for example a station image. Keep a static stream visually simple rather than spending spare processing capacity on effects or unnecessary motion.
- Add the correct audio source: an input device for a microphone or other hardware input, or an audio playback source for sound coming from the PC.
- Play representative audio and check the OBS audio meters. If the expected signal is missing, select the intended device manually in the source or audio settings.
A still picture does not make the broadcast audio-only: OBS still sends a video stream containing that image. Confirm that the audio can be heard and that the image appears in the preview before connecting to YouTube.
Connect OBS to a YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server information if OBS does not fill them in automatically. If YouTube integration is offered and you prefer it, use that connection method instead.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and start streaming. Confirm that the preview reaches YouTube’s Live Control Room and that YouTube reports stream health before you make the broadcast public or announce it.
Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it. Avoid sharing screenshots or recordings that expose the stream key. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using that broadcast again.

Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular PC or internet connection can maintain them.

These figures are YouTube recommendations accessed October 3, 2026, not minimum connection speeds or measured performance guarantees. Run a speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best momentary upload result. If OBS or YouTube reports instability, reduce the output load or bitrate and test again. For a static radio image, a simpler scene and a modest, stable resolution are usually more practical than adding visual complexity.

Test, go live, and handle the archive
- Before a public broadcast, run a test for a few minutes using representative audio and any movement or transitions you intend to use.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload and check YouTube’s stream-health messages in the Live Control Room. Confirm the audio is audible, the visual is correct, and the connection remains stable.
- If the test fails, change one setting at a time—such as bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity—then repeat the test.
- When finished, end the broadcast deliberately in OBS and YouTube Studio, and check the channel for the resulting archive.
YouTube’s current guidance accessed October 3, 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically; plan separate recording or archiving if retaining the full program matters.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A match can lead YouTube to replace the live image, warn the creator, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even material you are licensed to use may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

- Use music, recordings, and other program material you own or have permission to broadcast on YouTube live.
- Do not assume buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or possessing a copy grants live-stream rights.
- If you have a license and a rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether your channel can be added to its allowlist before going live.
- Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting material whose rights are unclear.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show a live preview
Check that live streaming is enabled, OBS is connected to the correct broadcast, and the stream URL and key match the one shown in the Live Control Room. If activation is new, allow the stated waiting period of up to 24 hours.
OBS meters show no audio
Confirm that the intended microphone or playback device is selected and active. Play audio while watching the meters; select the device manually if the expected signal is not visible. Also verify that the source is not muted.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health
Run an upload speed test, then lower the bitrate or output resolution and retest. Check OBS for encoding overload as well: a PC can struggle because of its encoder, frame rate, resolution, or scene complexity even when the connection is adequate.
The stream is interrupted after music starts
Check YouTube’s warning and copyright notices. Replace disputed material with content you are cleared to broadcast, or resolve Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder if you have the necessary rights.
The broadcast ended, but no archive appears
Check whether it lasted 12 hours or longer. YouTube’s stated automatic archive case is streams under 12 hours; keep your own recording or make other archive plans when a longer program must be retained.
