For a stereo kirtan livestream, use AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps as the starting audio settings. YouTube publishes these as its recommended stereo live-audio target. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMPS ingest when your encoder supports it, then test the full stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. These settings cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24-hour archive or rewind: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
Recommended audio settings for kirtan
| Setting | Recommendation | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC | YouTube also accepts MP3 for live audio; choose a format your encoder supports. |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz | Set the encoder’s audio sample rate to 44,100 Hz. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps stereo | This is YouTube’s published recommended stereo bitrate, not a promise that a higher bitrate will sound better to viewers. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Use constant bitrate if the encoder offers the option. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | Use it when available; YouTube says RTMPS encrypts stream data to and through Google’s servers. |
These are audio settings, separate from video resolution and video bitrate. Choose the video settings for the visual material and an upload connection that can sustain the entire broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test using audio and video similar to the real stream, then watching stream health and messages while live: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Set up and test the complete broadcast
- Choose the audio format. In your encoder’s audio settings, select AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps stereo. If AAC is unavailable, YouTube also accepts MP3 for live audio; the published stereo target is 128 kbps.
- Set CBR and RTMPS where available. These options depend on the encoder. Confirm that the stream is configured to send to YouTube using the secure RTMPS ingest endpoint if supported.
- Test the actual broadcast configuration. Run an upload speed test with a stream resembling your intended audio and video, rather than relying only on an unrelated speed result. Check YouTube’s stream health and any encoder or platform messages during the test and broadcast.
- Keep an independent archive if the recording matters. Start a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the full performance. YouTube warns that a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive; it does not guarantee a complete replay for a 24-hour session. See Archive live streams.
Plan around 24-hour stream limits
A continuous 24-hour session has consequences beyond audio quality. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay or listener rewind is important, do not assume one uninterrupted day-long broadcast will provide either. YouTube does not prescribe a restart interval that guarantees archive or DVR behavior. Review Turn on DVR on live streams and plan a local recording when preservation matters.
Check music rights before streaming kirtan
The devotional nature of a song does not itself establish permission to stream a particular recording or performance. YouTube’s livestream terms require broadcasters to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants: Livestream terms and conditions. Check the rights for the specific recording and performance you plan to use; this is practical guidance, not a legal determination about a song or territory.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. A licensed recording can still be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Confirm any required allowlisting with the rights holder before going live. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Choose an encoder that fits the job
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. For an audio-focused kirtan stream, the available guidance does not establish that dedicated hardware is necessary or identify a model to buy. Choose an encoder you can configure and monitor reliably; the audio targets above apply whichever supported encoder you use.
