OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when the internet connection drops, but it cannot restart OBS after the application crashes. For unattended recovery, pair OBS with an operating-system process supervisor that relaunches it, then verify the live event is back at YouTube. If viewers cannot see a gap during the restart, an independent relay or cloud playout layer may be needed.
First identify what failed
A stream that stops can mean two different things: OBS is still open but disconnected, or OBS itself has exited. The fix depends on which happened. OBS connects directly from your computer to the selected streaming service; the OBS Project Help Portal explains, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” Read OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
- OBS is open, but the stream is disconnected: check the connection, destination settings, and OBS’s reconnect behavior.
- OBS has exited: an external supervisor or watchdog must detect the stopped process and launch it again.
- Your computer or internet is down: a process supervisor on that same computer cannot restore service until the device and connection return.
Do not treat “the encoder is open” as proof that viewers can see the broadcast. Confirm the live status at YouTube after any recovery.
Set up OBS connection recovery
OBS Studio’s interface includes the control “Automatically Reconnect,” with retry-delay and maximum-retry controls. These settings are for a lost connection while OBS remains running; they do not relaunch an exited application. Menu locations, labels, and defaults can differ by release and output mode, so confirm the controls in your installed version rather than relying on a particular default.

- In OBS, open Settings and find the connection or stream output settings for your installed version.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum number of retries suited to the destination and the kind of interruption you expect. Avoid assuming retries will resolve an extended outage.
- Apply the settings and test a brief, controlled network interruption before depending on them during a public stream.
OBS says dropped frames can occur when the connection to the streaming destination is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A backup internet connection may help with a network failure, but it will not restart OBS after a software crash. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide for connection diagnosis.
Make OBS relaunch after a crash
For a computer-based 24/7 stream, configure an operating-system process supervisor or watchdog to notice when OBS exits and launch it again. This is separate from OBS’s own connection retry setting. OBS’s interface can report “OBS Studio did not properly shut down” and offer a Safe Mode launch, but that recovery prompt is not an unattended restart mechanism.
Configure the supervisor conservatively
- Set it to start the intended OBS executable and wait briefly before restarting after an unexpected exit.
- Use a delay or backoff between repeated attempts. A tight restart loop can repeatedly hit the same faulty plugin, script, media file, or encoder problem.
- Keep logs from the supervisor and OBS so you can establish whether OBS relaunched and what happened immediately before the failure.
- Test using the actual OBS profile, scene collection, media sources, and streaming setup. A successful empty OBS launch does not establish that the broadcast configuration recovered.
The exact supervisor setup depends on the operating system and how OBS is installed. The OBS sources cited here distinguish connection retry from a prior-crash recovery prompt; they do not prescribe a particular third-party or operating-system supervisor.

Confirm recovery at the destination
After a relaunch, check that the correct profile and scenes loaded, the intended media is playing, and OBS is sending to the correct destination. Then check YouTube’s live status. A restarted encoder window alone does not establish that the event resumed or that viewers are receiving the stream.
A 2021 OBS Project forum reply suggested that a manually defined YouTube event might continue if it had not been terminated in the YouTube dashboard. That is historical community advice, not a current platform guarantee. Test the behavior privately with the same event workflow you plan to use; do not assume a restart will attach to an existing event.
Choose how much audience continuity you need
OBS with a process supervisor
This approach keeps the encoder and stream under your control and can relaunch OBS after an exit. Its weak point is the interval while the computer restarts OBS and re-establishes the broadcast. Check restart detection, launch delay, scene and media recovery, crash-loop handling, logs, and whether your YouTube event remains usable.

An independent relay or managed playout layer
A relay between your encoder and destination may be able to keep a standby slate or backup audio on air while OBS is unavailable. This is a design to evaluate, not a guaranteed capability: a forum participant proposed an intermediary server with a “Please Stand By” or technical-difficulties slate, but did not establish a tested service or universal handoff behavior.
Before choosing a provider, get clear documentation and test its ingest method, fallback behavior, destination handoff, monitoring, latency, operating cost, and support. Confirm that the exact YouTube workflow is supported. A relay can address the audience-facing gap only if it remains available independently of the failed OBS process and handles the intended failure correctly.

- Establish whether OBS exited. Check the process status and the stream status separately. If OBS remains open, investigate the connection; if it exited, check whether the supervisor detected and relaunched it.
- If OBS is open but disconnected, inspect the destination and connection status, then review the reconnect settings. For dropped frames, investigate whether the connection is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate.
- If OBS relaunched but the stream is not back, verify the selected profile, scene collection, media sources, and destination event. Check YouTube’s status rather than relying solely on OBS.
- If OBS crashes again, review the OBS log, crash report, and recent changes, especially plugins and scripts. OBS’s prior-crash flow offers Safe Mode, which disables third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets for diagnosis.
- If viewers see a gap, decide whether the restart delay is acceptable or whether you need to test an independent relay or managed playout fallback.
- Run a controlled restart drill. Confirm both process recovery and what viewers see before relying on the setup for an important public broadcast.
A UPS can address some power interruptions; a backup internet link can address some network interruptions. Neither, on its own, restarts OBS after a software crash.

Check rights for the Indian music you stream
Technical continuity does not grant permission to rebroadcast recordings. India’s Copyright Act, 1957 uses the term “communication to the public”; Chapter III addresses rights in musical works and sound recordings. Identify the rights relevant to the actual recordings and underlying works, then verify their scope for your territory, platform, monetization, catalogue, and duration.
The Copyright Office’s Copyright Act text is a starting point for the statutory framework. IPRS describes licensing for works in its repertoire, including communication by streaming or other diffusion. PPL India describes permissions for sound recordings in the repertoire it controls. These sources do not establish clearance for every song or channel. Confirm the rights and terms that apply to your own catalogue; a consumer music subscription should not be treated as proof of rebroadcast permission.
