To stream from a Windows VPS, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, choose settings the VPS can encode and upload continuously, then send a test feed and check it in Live Control Room before going live. A VPS is not automatically powerful or well-connected enough for every OBS workload: confirm the specific plan’s encoder access, sustained outbound capacity and transfer limits.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days before you can stream using an encoder. Check the channel and its access in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live. Create a stream or schedule one. Use the stream’s encoder settings in Live Control Room to obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
- Set OBS to use YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. If using a custom server configuration, enter YouTube’s server URL as well. Prefer an RTMPS ingest URL where supported; RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, as explained in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Configure and start OBS. Set the output and video options to a workload the VPS can handle, then select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room and inspect the preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s flow directs you to select Go live once the feed is ready.
- Verify the viewing experience. Check that the watch page is accessible as intended, that audio and video are present, and that Live Control Room reports healthy stream status. Keep the session open to monitor health during the broadcast.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. For stereo audio, its page recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate. For SDR video, it recommends Rec. 709.
These YouTube recommendations describe ingest settings; they do not establish what a particular VPS can encode or upload. The following are YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates, not guarantees of VPS performance:

Values are YouTube recommendations published on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain, rather than assuming the highest listed option is appropriate. A short speed-test peak alone does not demonstrate reliable upload throughout a long stream; test the connection over time and leave practical headroom. YouTube recommends speed testing and selecting a quality that is reliable for the available connection.
Confirm the Windows VPS can do the work
OBS load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS Project warns, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system requirements page does not provide a universal VPS specification that guarantees a given broadcast workload.

Before committing to a plan, check what the Windows guest actually has access to and can sustain:
- Encoding capacity: verify that the chosen software or hardware encoder is available to OBS on that VPS. If relying on GPU encoding, confirm the provider exposes compatible GPU/encoder access to the guest.
- Real-time performance: test the exact resolution, frame rate, scenes and sources you plan to use. Watch OBS’s performance indicators and confirm frames are not being missed or skipped during representative motion.
- Outbound network: confirm sustained upload capacity at your selected video bitrate, plus room for audio and normal variation. Ask the provider about transfer caps or policies that could affect a continuous stream.
- Control and recovery: ensure you can access the Windows session and OBS to inspect the preview, respond to an ingest interruption and restart the encoder if needed.
There is no provider-independent vCPU, memory or GPU number that can be recommended from OBS and YouTube’s general guidance alone. Verify the exact plan and test it before relying on it for an event.

Test before the event and monitor it live
Use a representative test with motion and audio similar to the planned content. Confirm that OBS can encode continuously, YouTube receives the feed, the preview looks and sounds right, and Live Control Room shows no unresolved stream-health issue. If possible, test using the same VPS plan, output settings and network route you intend to use for the real broadcast.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips suggest setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are production recommendations, not technical prerequisites. Use the early window to inspect the feed and make corrections before viewers arrive.

Troubleshoot common VPS-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or an unsupported ingest configuration. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current event’s Live Control Room details. Confirm OBS says it is streaming and use an RTMPS server URL where supported. |
| OBS struggles or frames are missed | The VPS cannot encode the selected resolution, frame rate, encoder or scene workload in real time. | Test the same scenes and motion at a lower resolution or frame rate, or use an encoder actually available to the VPS. Recheck performance before the event. |
| Stream health reports connection or bitrate trouble | The VPS’s sustained outbound connection may not support the configured bitrate reliably. | Run a sustained upload test, check provider transfer policies, and reduce the video bitrate or output quality until the feed is stable. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or poor | OBS audio routing, selected device/source, codec or audio settings may be wrong. | Check OBS’s audio mixer and output configuration; verify a supported stereo codec and inspect the Live Control Room preview with sound. |
| The scheduled broadcast is not visible to viewers | The feed may be reaching YouTube, but the event has not been taken live or its visibility/watch-page setup is not what you expect. | Check the event in Live Control Room, follow its Go live step when ready, and verify the intended watch page and visibility. |
| The stream key no longer works | The key may have been changed or reset, or OBS may be using a key from another event. | Copy the current event’s key from Live Control Room. If the old key was exposed, reset it and replace it in OBS. |
