Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo use a YouTube stream key with OBS, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key for the intended stream, enter them in OBS under Settings → Stream, then start the encoder and confirm that YouTube shows a preview. The key lets OBS send video to YouTube; it does not keep your computer or internet connection online. For a continuous stream, those must remain available, and you should monitor stream health.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Install and open OBS Studio, and have the video and audio sources you plan to stream ready.
- Check the stable upload capacity available to the streaming computer. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; download speed alone does not tell you whether your upload can sustain a broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
A stream key is a sensitive credential: it identifies the YouTube ingest destination and authorizes an encoder to send a feed. Keep it private, and do not include it in screenshots or public support posts.
Get the matching stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a new stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube may load earlier settings, including a previously used key.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the pair together; a key for a different stream may not match the selected destination.
- Before starting, check the stream’s visibility setting—public, unlisted or private—and confirm any scheduled-stream and auto-start settings that apply. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions cover the Live Control Room workflow.
Enter the key in OBS and start the stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the appropriate built-in YouTube service if available, or select a custom streaming server if you are entering the server details manually.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL as the server and paste the matching stream key into the key field. OBS documents these controls in its streaming overview.
- Open Settings → Output and configure the encoder and bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Use a bitrate YouTube recommends for the codec and video mode you selected; do not choose a value that exceeds the connection’s stable upload capacity.
- Under video encoder settings, use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where supported. YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Available options depend on protocol and encoder. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings table for the resolution, frame rate and codec you will use.
- Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, confirm that video and audio are correct, and check stream health before relying on the broadcast. For a scheduled stream, follow the control room’s start procedure and verify the relevant auto-start setting. YouTube recommends starting the encoder early enough to preview and test before the event; see its live-streaming tips.
For example, YouTube’s current table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for the same mode with H.264. These are codec-specific recommended examples, not universal settings: check the table for your chosen video mode and use a lower sustainable setting if your connection cannot hold the recommendation.
What “continuous” means with OBS
OBS can send a feed for as long as the encoder computer, OBS, power and network remain available. A stream key does not prevent a computer crash, internet interruption or YouTube ingest problem. YouTube recommends monitoring a live stream rather than assuming that the encoder will remain connected indefinitely.

Reconnect can help, but does not guarantee uninterrupted viewing
OBS has an automatic reconnect option that can try to restore an encoder connection after an interruption. Dropped frames or repeated disconnections can indicate unstable network conditions or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reconnecting may leave a gap for viewers, so treat it as a recovery aid rather than a continuity guarantee. OBS’s streaming troubleshooting guidance describes connection-related checks.
Looping a video only repeats the media
If the stream is a prerecorded video, add it as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop in that source’s properties. The setting makes the file play again after it finishes, as described in the OBS media sources documentation. It does not restart OBS, protect the computer from failure, or ensure that YouTube keeps a single live event open.

A single event is not an unlimited archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That is an archiving threshold in its encoder instructions, not a promise that one broadcast can stay live forever or be preserved as an unlimited recording. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Choose the ingestion protocol deliberately
Use the protocol configured for the stream in YouTube Studio, and make sure OBS is set up for the same destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure RTMP transport. HLS is a separate ingestion setup with its own URL and segment requirements; it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Do not paste an HLS URL into an RTMP server configuration. The suitable protocol depends on your latency needs and encoder compatibility, not on a universal rule that one option fits every stream. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and its HLS ingestion guidance.

End the broadcast safely
When you are ready to stop, use the appropriate end action in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS, following the workflow for whether the stream is scheduled and whether auto-stop is enabled. Check that the event has ended as intended rather than relying on the key being present or the media file finishing.
Troubleshoot common stream-key and connection problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube shows no preview | The server URL and key may not match the selected YouTube stream, or the connection may not be reaching YouTube. | Recheck the URL and key in OBS against the intended Live Control Room stream, confirm network access, and inspect the connection status. Do not share the key while asking for help. |
| Key rejected or stream goes to the wrong event | OBS may have an old key or one belonging to another stream. | Select the intended stream in YouTube Studio and replace OBS’s key with its current matching key. If the key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. |
| Dropped frames or recurring disconnections | The upload connection may be unstable, or the configured bitrate may be too high for sustained upload capacity. | Check OBS and YouTube stream health, measure stable upload capacity, and lower bitrate to a sustainable value while consulting YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube advises 20% upload headroom. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, testing a wired Ethernet connection is an optional diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix. |
| Preview works, but audio, motion or watch page is wrong | The encoder may be sending an incorrect source, audio mix, visibility setting or stream configuration. | Test video and audio in the Live Control Room before the public start, confirm the watch page and visibility, and verify the resolution and frame rate in OBS. |
| Trying to test without a public launch | The event may be visible to the public before you have checked it. | Where appropriate, use an unlisted or private stream, confirm the preview and watch page, then select the intended visibility before the planned broadcast. |
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
A working stream key only handles encoder access; it does not grant rights to the video, music or other material you broadcast, nor does it ensure that a channel meets YouTube’s policies. Use content you have permission to stream and review YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies where relevant, especially if you plan to monetize prerecorded or repetitive material.
