If your Switchboard Live YouTube stream has no audio, first find out whether the silence affects one viewer or many. Then trace the sound from its source through your encoder and YouTube’s ingest. Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor can confirm that video is arriving, but the documented monitor check does not verify audio. Use encoder meters, a local recording, and YouTube Live Control Room messages to narrow down the fault.
First, find out who cannot hear the stream
Ask viewers whether they hear silence, and compare their reports with your own playback. The scope is a quick clue about where to look.
- One viewer is affected: YouTube says the problem is probably with that viewer’s computer or internet connection. Have them try another browser or device and check their player and system volume.
- Several viewers on different networks are affected: Investigate the encoder’s audio source and outgoing stream.
- Affected viewers share one network: Check that network as well as the affected devices.

Trace the audio from source to YouTube
Check each stage in sequence rather than changing several settings at once. This helps distinguish a silent microphone or application from a routing, encoder, or playback problem.

1. Confirm that the source produces sound
Make sure the microphone, game, mixer, or other intended source is actually producing audio. Check any physical gain control, the operating system’s sound controls, and the application’s own volume. If possible, create a short test recording before changing the live workflow.
2. Check the encoder’s mixer and output
If you use OBS, open its Audio Mixer and confirm that the intended source is present, unmuted, and showing meter activity while sound is being produced. Check the source fader and selected input device. OBS documents these controls in its Audio Mixer Guide.

Do not rely only on what you hear through monitoring headphones: monitoring and the audio sent to viewers are separate. Check a normal local recording or other output evidence. If it is silent too, look upstream at the source, routing, or encoder. If it has sound but YouTube does not, focus on the encoder’s outgoing audio configuration and YouTube’s ingest diagnostics.
Also listen for one-sided audio. A stereo source with signal on only one channel can leave viewers hearing sound on only one side.

3. Check Switchboard’s receiving status
In the Switchboard workflow, confirm that the encoder is connected and the workflow indicates it is receiving. Switchboard’s setup instructions describe sending a test feed and checking that video appears in the Confidence Monitor and the workflow changes from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” See Switchboard Live Initial Setup and the Workflow Page.
A picture in the Confidence Monitor establishes that video is arriving; Switchboard’s documentation does not say that this monitor has a separate audio meter or proves audio delivery. If no video appears and the workflow is not receiving, check the encoder’s stream URL, key, and connection before treating the problem as YouTube-only.

4. Read YouTube Live Control Room’s health message
Look at the stream health or error message in YouTube Live Control Room. The message “The ingestion stream contains no audio stream” points toward the encoder’s audio output configuration. YouTube notes that some encoders have a control to enable audio and that audio is required on videos. Its live streaming errors guide also covers multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, and incorrect audio settings.
Follow the specific error shown instead of changing codecs speculatively. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codec options for live encoder settings and recommends testing audio before going live and monitoring stream health during the event: YouTube live encoder settings.

Fix silence that affects one viewer
If your local recording and other viewers confirm that the stream has audio, have the affected viewer check the YouTube player volume, browser or device volume, and device sound settings. They can restart the browser or device and compare playback in another browser or on another device. YouTube’s viewer guidance is at How to fix no sound on YouTube.
When a microphone replacement may help
A USB microphone is worth considering only if you have identified the built-in or existing microphone itself as defective or inadequate. It will not fix a muted mixer source, missing encoder audio output, a YouTube ingest issue, or a viewer’s playback setting.
