If OBS crashes, its outgoing feed stops. The reliable way to keep a YouTube broadcast going is to prepare a separate backup encoder, connect it to the same event with the correct YouTube stream key, and test that the player switches to it. YouTube recommends this failover approach, but does not promise a seamless, interruption-free handoff.
What happens when OBS crashes?
OBS encodes and sends the live video and audio to YouTube. If the OBS process crashes, that encoder stops producing its feed; restarting OBS may restore the primary feed, but it does not prevent an interruption. YouTube’s continuity guidance is to configure a separate backup encoder and verify that the player rolls over to it. A backup is a second feed—not a mechanism that keeps the crashed OBS process running. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing failover, without guaranteeing how quickly viewers will see a switch or that the transition will be interruption-free.
Set up and test a backup encoder
1. Prepare the event and backup in advance
YouTube advises setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Configure the backup encoder independently of OBS, using the correct YouTube server URL and stream key for the event. YouTube describes the stream key as the information an encoder uses to send its feed; treat it like a credential and do not share it publicly. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
2. Make the backup genuinely independent
A second software encoder on another device can serve as a backup if it is configured and ready before the primary fails. A dedicated hardware encoder is another possible component of a redundant setup; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Its guidance does not certify a particular model or prescribe a specific backup arrangement. In either case, verify the actual configuration rather than assuming that a second encoder will automatically take over.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check that the backup has the video and audio sources, overlays and working internet connection needed to produce the intended program. Consider how independent it is from the OBS computer and its network connection, how quickly it can take over, and what interruption or latency viewers may experience. YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify handoff time.
3. Test the rollover before relying on it
- Start the primary and backup encoders with the intended YouTube event configuration.
- Open the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room and check that the broadcast is accessible on watch pages and mobile.
- Stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable—the test YouTube specifically recommends for encoder failover.
- Watch the YouTube player and confirm that it rolls over to the backup feed. Check audio and video quality on the backup as well.
- Restore the primary connection and confirm your intended recovery procedure. Repeat the test if you change the event, encoder, stream key or backup setup.
Do not infer that failover works merely because both encoders can connect. The important result is seeing the player switch under the failure condition you intend to handle.

What to do if the backup does not take over
Check the stream key and server URL
Confirm that the backup encoder uses the correct YouTube server URL and the stream key from the intended event. If a key was reset, update the encoder with the new one. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to copy the key from Live Control Room into the encoder when a key problem prevents it from starting. Consult Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and Manage live stream settings.
Check the backup feed in Live Control Room
Use the preview to establish whether YouTube is receiving the backup, then check the player for rollover. If the preview is missing or its audio or video is wrong, troubleshoot the backup encoder, its sources and its connection before relying on it. Confirm that the event is accessible on watch pages and mobile, and keep monitoring quality during the broadcast.

Choose failover, HLS or a recording for the right job
| Option | What it helps with | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Separate backup encoder | Provides another feed for YouTube to receive if the primary encoder fails; test it with the intended event. | YouTube does not promise a seamless handoff or specify its duration. |
| HLS backup ingestion | YouTube documents a backup server URL for HLS ingestion. | HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. It does not restart OBS after a crash. |
| Local recording | Preserves a copy of the program for recovery or editing. | It does not keep the broadcast live. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. |
For HLS details, see YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. For the archive limit and options, see Archive live streams. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a separate safeguard; verify that a local recording file is growing during the event.
