Add trusted moderators and schedule human handoffs if you expect chat to be watched continuously: a nonstop broadcast does not mean nonstop moderation.
Set channel-wide live chat moderation in YouTube Studio
These defaults apply to your channel’s live chat. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls.
Choose a held-message review level
Under live-chat messages, select None, Basic, or Strict for potentially inappropriate messages. With Basic or Strict review, YouTube can hold messages for the channel owner or a managing moderator to show or hide. A held message is not published automatically; if nobody acts, it stays hidden.
YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” The documentation does not quantify false positives or identify one setting as best for meditation streams. A practical starting point is Basic review with trusted human coverage, then adjust after observing your chat.

Block recurring spam words and phrases
In the same moderation settings, add recurring scam terms, spam phrases, or other words unsuitable for your community to the blocked-words list. Messages containing or closely matching listed terms are blocked from live chat. Revisit the list as patterns change; a filter cannot replace human review.
Choose who can participate
Chat access is a trade-off: fewer barriers make it easier for new listeners to join, while participation gates can add friction for spammers and newcomers alike.

For a new or broadly accessible meditation community, open chat with message review and moderators is a reasonable place to start. If spam becomes disruptive, consider subscriber-only chat; membership-only chat may suit a community that intentionally limits chat to members. Subscriber-only and members-only chat cannot be enabled at the same time.
Slow down a busy chat
To limit how often an individual can post, open the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room, edit it, open customization, and set a delay under Message delay. Slow mode can be used alongside subscriber-only chat. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from the delay, so it will not rate-limit those accounts.

Use the smallest delay that makes a fast-moving conversation manageable. Slow mode reduces posting frequency; it does not decide whether a message is appropriate or provide coverage when no moderator is present.

- Standard moderators can help with message cleanup, timeouts, hiding users, and reviewing held messages.
- Managing moderators have broader live-chat controls, including participant mode, blocked words, and toggling chat. That role does not provide access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
For an around-the-clock stream, write down who covers each time window, how moderators hand over context, and what to do when a problem needs the channel owner. YouTube’s documented tools do not provide a built-in 24/7 staffing service or guarantee unattended coverage. If continuous human review is a requirement, arrange actual people to cover it.

Check actual chat patterns and tune blocked words, review level, access restrictions, and delay accordingly. YouTube notes that held messages can be shown at their original time or kept hidden, and automated review may not catch everything.

Live-chat replay is on by default for stream archives. You can turn it off for an individual archive. Decide whether your moderation policy and community expectations should apply to replay as well as the live conversation.
Keep the stream running separately from chat moderation
Moderation settings control participation and messages; they do not keep a broadcast running or staff its chat.
